I asked one of the Blackhawks sales reps one time and he said there’s a minimum distance that the scoreboard has to be from the ice, per NHL regulations, and the boards dropping would interfere with that required distance.

Also what happened to the steam that would come out from the board after goals or when they would come out onto the ice?
