You can’t win if you generate the little offense the Devils generated today.

  2. This is why I value guys like Daws so much. Just calm for a third period even when everything goes not-your-way. When healthy this team can overcome any deficit, what we need is *calm* back there and not perfection.

The last ten years have broken me, but it feels just like the Devils to have me lose hope after the Jack injury, then play great against Tampa and Florida to get me believing in miracles again, and then lay a goose egg today to have me come back to Earth where our team has seven players out and likely won’t make the wild card. It’s the hope that kills you.

  4. the 3-0 on the scoreboard looks worse than they deserved imo, overall I thought they were fine, probably had a chance to win it. They’re playing much better than I expected with all the injuries and you have to credit Ruff there. 1-1-1 a road trip we were all a little nervous for? I take that all day. Get at least 3 more wins out of these next 6 before the all star break and we’re in a good spot for when Jack comes back.

Damn injury’s bug , bites us far too often this year.

  6. Kanbe7077

Marino was a beast this game. Him, Haula, Nemec and McLeod really led the depth this game.

We played Bruins’ game today and I think that sucks. They boxed up the slot and Swayman looks like one of the best rebound goalies in the game. Not only that but he eats up every puck and shot like it’s hungry hungry hippo.

Literally the kryptonite that everyone mimics against us. We kept feeding into that instead of adjusting our game plan to more offense from the blue line.

Colorado straight up doubles up their strong side and why can’t we?

It’s a pain when the opposite team aren’t afraid of your defensemen. I’m also not sure why Luke Hughes isnt better? Skate, shoot, drive possession, anything. Dougie really might be the most important devils player right now. Even with Hughes and Bratt.

Anyways , great game by Daws.

    Palat – Jack – Meier

    Siegenthaler – Hamilton

That’s a pretty strong group missing. Add in Smith, if he’s out Foote will probably be getting games. And not Nolan, because he’s injured otherwise he’d definitely have had minutes. Nosek out also. Pretty brutal.

    Second Shutout of the Season:

    * But not wholly upset about it!
    * Nico Daws has emerged.
    * Unfortunately, we had absolutely zero offense to speak of. I saw maybe like a handful of actually dangerous chances for us, otherwise our offense looked pretty flaccid.
    * Really wanted to get at least a point tonight, but happy with this road trip given our woes overall.
    * We’re seeing so many great things in this last three games. I mean massive applause to Simon Nemec. What a god damn star already. I’m consistently in awe.
    * Also, like honestly FUCK Boston. I hate this team and the dudes on this team so damn much. And you know what, I’ll fucking say it, I don’t give a shit about their goalie tandem goalie hug whatever. Fuck em.
    * Devils really gotta address special teams man. PK hasn’t been consistent all year. We have Power Kills where we’re dominating and not giving the other team anything and then turn around and aren’t able to clear or change personnel for over a minute. PP needs to have a different game plan minus Jack. You gotta start using the strength of the other guys and not try to do what you did when Jack was there. Also like opposing teams have figured out Luke’s moves on the blue line, so you gotta address that.
    * Brendan Smith out potentially since he didnt come back for the rest of the game. That will cause another issue. We have Cal Foote but I don’t feel comfortable playing him, but dunno what other solutions we have that aren’t trade solutions.
    * All love to Nico Daws, that game absolutely wasn’t on him.
    * One of the best Marino games, looks like that empty netter against Florida activated something.
    * Hopefully we have some updates on timelines for our Timo, Jack and Pally.
    * Think Lindy needs to do something about Toff. He’s not producing without Jack and I kind of think a line shake up might be in order. Nico, Bratter, Mercer, McLeod, and Haula are your top forwards right now plus Holtzy, but Lindy is an idiot.
    * The remaining week of games is Montreal, Columbus, and Dallas. I would love to take four to six points from those games. I think two of those games are absolutely winnable and must wins. Dallas game will be the hardest given the opponent and given the second game of a back to back, but that is Ring of Honor night so maybe the boys will be inspired.

I wouldn’t have said this a couple weeks ago, but I believe the organization should just let this season ride out. Don’t spend any money buying players, or trading any assets for some kind of desperate attempt to go on a playoff, glory run, that we can get knocked out of just a game or two before the end of the season. If we make it, great, give it a try with what we got, but the competition is wayyyy to tight this season, and our injuries are stacked. I’d rather these guys come back, play easy, and get a long summer to recover. Then we’ll worry about corrections next year. I’m sure people will disagree, but I fear the situation escalating.

  10. NJDevil802

Obviously don’t love the result but essentially a 2-0 against one of the best teams in the league with all of our injuries? I’ll take it. As Dano said, we need to tread water until we get healthy

  11. chefboleson

i mean, silver lining in the difference being a lack of scoring rather than goaltending . 5 defenseman and a depleted forward group . there’s still several talented guys in there, somebody’s gotta step it up there (looking at toffoli, bratt, mercer, holtz ..)

  12. Not overly mad about losing to the Bruins, but it’d be a shame if they let the games in hand we have now go to waste. Montreal and Columbus coming up next, really no excuses if we drop one or both of those games.

Halfway through the season, a better second half is going to be needed if we want to sneak into the playoffs.

  13. NJDevils1

Obviously a loss isn’t good but if Daws can play like this for like… a majority? of the games he plays it bodes well for the rest of even this year as players return. I don’t want to hang our hopes for the season on him but fuck it feels good to get good goaltending.

  14. I mean, the loss sucks and all, though not totally unexpected. But Nemec making Marchand his bitch made my day.

  15. themakiexperiment

Honestly it was a good effort against the top team in fbe league. I feel like the boys did the most with what they could with the talent at hand

  16. We really need to win the next two, it’s unthinkable lose points on both. But the sequence DAL, VGK, CAR and TBL is going to define our season.

  17. dog_fantastic

And in Metro fashion, down to 6th the the division with a strong potential of it being 7th after tomorrow.

  18. MangoJuice82

Good thing I didnt fake sickness and went home to watch this game and waste 4 hrs of PTO just to see the Devils get blanked, lmao. Womp womp. Please win against the Habs.

  19. DisasterOne1365

Starting to think that Luke wants to play in Vancouver because they have a better record.

  20. Training-Material155

These Ruff takes are getting a little rough to take (pun intended). Worst injuries in the league possibly; playing literally teenagers on D in a brutal division with crap goaltending he’s done a decent job. They’re not firing him anyway, so get healthy make a playoff push and if they sneak in who knows and if they don’t the future looks great.

  21. Here’s my cooked take.

Holtz is getting limited time on ice because Fitz intends on trading him, and Lindy is giving him limited time to play to prevent him getting injured and also showing some of his skill.

Vitek, Holtz and Seamus Casey for a goalie and defenseman.

  22. PacTheTac

Why is Holtz getting less ice time while Luke gets to a make bone head play after another and be fine,

  23. Soco_Amaretto_Lime

Is anyone else fucking terrified with how Nemec went into the boards at the end of the game? I really hope he is not hurt too. We literally have to depend on him to play the toughest minutes at this point.

Luke Hughes has been a turnover machine. Literally the first seconds of the game, that is 1-0 if Vanecek is between the pipes. We took for granted how many big saves Daws made. In reality, this could’ve easily been 5-0.

Despite the result, I don’t think we played poorly as a team. We were up against a top team playing a perfect defensive game and Swayman came up big when he needed to.

As others have said already, the next two games are crucial for the playoff race. We still have games in hand, and injuries or not, we need 4 points. Thing is, MTL and CBJ haven’t been easy wins recently, despite their place in the standings. I selfishly want to see Daws play the next game again and then re-assess.

  24. Hughes has been awful for a stretch of games now. Turnovers, weak on the puck, making wrong decisions. Lost count the amount of times Dano has said “oh boy” towards him recently

  25. Subject1337

Just a reminder for those panicking… Today our roster was missing Hughes, Meier, Palat, Siegenthaler, Smith, and Hamilton. I think the duration of these injuries has a lot of people feeling like this is just our roster and we’re behind expectations, but there are very few teams who could withstand this amount of injury to their roster and not be an outright basement dweller.

  26. nostradamefrus

Just finished watching the game off my DVR. I’m conflicted because getting shut out always sucks, but Daws put on a fucking show. Honestly, the team as a whole didn’t play that badly. Boston’s goals weren’t softies and even our best scoring opportunity didn’t cut it against Swayman. I don’t think there’s many excuses to be made, we just got beat

But for god’s sake, guys, LIFT THE PUCK ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN YOU SHOOT

Unrelated to this game, it feels like we play Columbus every other game, what the fuck is going on? I don’t think we’ve played any other division opponent this much so far
