Jim Benning Depth vs Patrik Allvin Depth

It’s amazing how far decent depth players can get you…

Nothing really wrong with Gaudette. Great prospect that found some success early on, just never panned out in the long run.

Benn was also a pretty good bottom pair defenceman. He was screwed more by Green’s insistence on playing him on his natural side when he was much better on his off side.

But yeah, Benning’s pro scouting was questionnable at best, Dude simply didn’t understand that you didn’t have to pay $3m for 4th line players…

I don’t think Gaudette belongs here, getting into one game from his draft position was incredible let alone the amount he’s managed.

  3. Mikheyev rules. Really glad he’s bounced back so well from that knee injury even if he’s still not as fast as he was before it happened.

  4. Gaudette was rushed into the NHL. If he got proper development time in a healthy organization, he could still be in the league today.

Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, Sbisa, Gudbranson, Pouliot etc. was a list of horror.

I remember the a game in the Canadian division agains the Leafs, and Spezza scored a hat trick on us while on a league minimum and I thought to myself “Jay Beagle has a higher caphit than 3 Spezzas combined and we would be lucky if he even scored 3 goals all season.” Those days were horrible.

Pro scouting is JR and Allvin’s main strength and you can definitely see the vision in the works this year. Blueger, Suter, Lafferty, Cole, Soucy, Zadorov all added in a few months for relatively cheap prices.

This isn’t to defend Benning so please don’t take it that way but a big factor in the bottom 6 and depth success is that our best players are fully in their primes now, which makes it a lot easier to fill a role.

Think of the year Green got fired – Petey and Hughes held out of training camp basically the same year they were given the keys to the franchise. It was too much to put on them and that’s why the team ultimately failed which is managements fault, however now that Petey and Hughes are established veterans it makes it a lot easier to be a bottom 6 forward or be the 3rd pairing guy when you play 16 minutes against other teams bottom guys.

  7. The amount of extra cash, contract years and draft picks Benning gave away for trash is mind boggling.

  8. One of the most Improved aspects of this team that’s probably not talked about enough is the improvement found in Pro Scouting and Analytics.

What a difference in going from the Sea of Grandlunds, Brandons Sutters, and Jay Beagles to Pius Suter, Dakota Joshua and Teddy Blueger.

Anyone know how these stats are tracked? Is somebody watching every player to track these? Is it the pucks or a vest they’re wearing? Thanks! Sorry if this is a dumb question to ask…

So here’s a thing. If you take the stats from a good team having a good season vs a bad team having a bad season, of course the numbers will favour the good team and it’s players. Because they are having success. Just a little tip.

The only WAR Jake is gonna see is in the Ukraine.

Is that pre or post magic crystals Gaudette?

  13. superworking

Benn was a pretty good pickup. So was Schenn. Dickinson still the one that I thought Benning got right but just never worked. Pearson was really good for us. Virtanen I still believe was heavily impacted by ownership and the narrative at the time of how we missed local power forward Lucic in the draft.

Benning wasn’t good. He was really bad. But this is just a bad misrepresentation.

  14. Teddy Blueger is an unsung hero.

Guy is playing at almost a 50 point over 82 pace, playing excellent defensive hockey, despite only being paid 1.9m.

He was signed basically to be our 4C, and is playing at nearly a 2C level.

  15. Lord_Bryon

To be fair to Benning, it’s hardly his fault that Virtanen turned out to be a pice of shit

  16. didn’t realize how good mikheyev’s advanced stats were

  17. GangreneMachine

Beagle fucking robbed the Canucks. My God he was horrendous

  18. Idk if I’d call mikheyev a depth guy. He’s basically been stapled to the top 6 since he got here.

Holy shit is that OELs card for this year? I knew he wasn’t that great with them but damn.

  20. shadownet97

Did I ever mention how much I love the Pius Suter signing? My goodness for 1.6×2, what an absolute STEAL by Allvin.

    We really went from

“Obviously this team is rebuilding why won’t ownership just admit it already!”

    to

“Pfft, check out the depth we have on our successful team versus the depth we had during a rebuild. Is banning a hockee terrerist???”
