As a hawks fan, super happy about this. The people out here who are questioning why they would spend that kind of money on him, and also not trade him, do not have a strong understanding of the hawks rebuilding situation. On a 2 year extension, like with Foligno, it ends the same year as Bedard’s contract. And Bedard will be the only player on the hawks roster right now that will cost a pretty penny by the time his contract ends. So, the money they’re spending doesn’t matter. Then, the value they’d get for both guys (Foligno and Dickinson) wouldn’t be enough to warrant losing them off this roster. Their leadership is impeccable, on and off the ice. And not to mention, these guys have been very vocal about loving the team, its players, and its direction. This was the best move with him.
Next they just need to sign Mrazek to an extension.
They pay him for being a good leader/pro for the team (yes, Jim Benning use to do this all the time with the Canucks). The difference is, Dickinson has had 2 good seasons in Chicago, respected within the room and as the Blackhawks bring in the next wave of prospects/young players onto the team, Dickinson and Foglino will be the ones who show them the ropes on how to be a pro. Is this an overpayment? Absolutely. They need to overpay for these players to play on a rebuilding team for 2 years where there isn't going to be a lot of winning. But the Blackhawks have the cap space. Both Foglino and Dickinson's contract will come off the books the same season Bedard needs an extension after his ELC. Unlike Jim Benning, who signed 1-2 contracts like this every summer and give them more term on top of it.

As a Blackhawks fan I absolutely love this signing! Dickinson has been such a great leader this year! Foligno is probably the best veteran Kyle Davidson could have signed to help the youth grow in the organization
the guy was a total zero in vancouver. his deal was worse than OEL's production wise.
When you said huge contract I was prepared to hear 7-8 years 😂. 2 years to stay on that team and not sniff a cup chance comes at a premium.

It’s definitely not a huge contract. The Hawks have to overpay some because they need to get to the cap floor. This contract and Foligno’s contract does that.
