RED WINGS BACK IN THE PLAYOFF HUNT – Winged Wheel Podcast – Jan. 18th, 2024

WWP Night at the LCA (in partnership with the Detroit Red Wings) tickets – first 400 ticket buyers get a co-branded Red Wings x WWP hat! https://fevo-enterprise.com/event/Wingedwheel/offer

The Detroit Red Wings are on FIRE and Alex Lyon is leading the charge.

Tune in as we discuss ANOTHER Detroit win, as Derek Lalonde & the Red Wings beat the Florida Panthers in overtime: Michael Rasmussen & Olli Maatta’s quietly strong play, Dylan Larkin’s OT redemption, Seider & Gostisbehere leading the defense without Walman, Alex Lyon a stalwart in net, & more (5:05). Also, a longer discussion on Rasmussen’s return to form, Maatta turning it on, and Lyon among the NHL leaders in goaltending stats (14:00).

After that, a look as Detroit (maybe temporarily) passed Toronto for an Atlantic Division playoff seed, whether they can hold pace for that or a wild card spot, & playoff hopes overall (20:40) before an update on Patrick Kane & Jake Walman (26:25).

Next, Amazon buying into Bally Sports and what that means for Hockeytown on TV (27:15), the Ottawa Senators potentially moving Tarasenko or even Chychrun (31:20), McDavid & the Oilers, NHL All-Star jerseys, & lots more (40:30) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (48:30) – enjoy!

  1. Wednesday was one of the most consistent games I’ve seen this team play this year. Encouraging to see a hard nosed win where they only give up 2 goals and not a 7-6 barn burner sh*t show. Lyon has been a revelation during this run and it’s been great.

  2. Thoughts:

    * I feel bad for Ottawa, honestly. Forget the "Twitter war" nonsense, that team has been pretty awful for most of the last 20 years. They're like the Coyotes of Canada, except they have a barn to play in.

    * Amazon propping up Diamond Sports Group/Bally Sports is just delaying the inevitable. Their streaming app is a costly, terrible thing. With the Amazon capital though, maybe streaming improves? But even if it does, it's still supporting a dying format in that a lot of folks are divorcing themselves of cable television. With any luck, at the very least, maybe Amazon money will afford Diamond the ability to keep the lights on as various contracts with teams expire.

    * Those All-Star sweaters look like they were designed by stoners in a Hardee's parking lot. Yeah, maybe those sweaters are for the Generation Alpha kids, but they're still a complete eyesore. The only adult sized sweaters that will be sold will be to jersey hoarders.

    * Should the Wings make the playoffs, I think the only real dangerous teams that were named would be Boston and Florida. I don't see PIT or TB as very dangerous, though I also don't seem them as teams one should underestimate.

As always, Let's go Red Wings!
