I think Pettersson's camp has 2 major motivations for wanting to wait and both are probably equally as important. Obviously, the longer this drags out, the higher Pettersson's price tag will probably be. Also, he doesn't want this to become a distraction for him. It's already a distraction for the media and the fans because he's an elite player who is an RFA at the end of this season and if he only signs for one year, a UFA after that. This is the first year since Elias joined the team that they've been this good, and I'm sure the last thing he wants to worry about is dollars and cents. This could be his first big chance to be a part of the team doing something significant in the playoffs besides that bubble year, and if he's at all distracted by negotiations (how can you not be with your agent calling you with updates?), that could hurt the team. He's a competitive guy and he's said he wants to win first and foremost. If his contract negotiations derail that goal, that's terrible. As for the media reporting on this stuff, this is their job. If they told us nothing, we'd wonder why. If they were just mouthpieces for the organization, most of us wouldn't be happy with that either. The media, sports or other news, aren't supposed to be cheerleaders. Their job is to hold whoever they're reporting on accountable to the public. We can complain about them all we want, but if they didn't exist, it would be a whole lot worse. The only reason we've had the changes we've had in this city is because the media held the franchise accountable and they finally made the changes that were necessary and here we are.
