The Other Staal Brother – The Jared Staal Story

On June 21st 2008, Jared Staal was selected in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. Five years later on April 25th 2013, the youngest of four siblings would make his NHL Debut with the Carolina Hurricanes. Though he would finally get the chance to join his three older brothers in the NHL and have the opportunity to carve out an impressive career of his own, his time in the best league in the world wouldn’t last as long or be quite as successful as his siblings…

This is the story of the other Staal brother!

  1. Why not mention that his NHL debut against the Rangers would have been against the the 4th Staal brother Marc but unfortunately he was injured?

  2. Nothing to be ashamed of. He got to play in the NHL and in other pro leagues. He could use his name to be a coach or manager and work his way up.

  3. As a parent of brother players it would be so tough to know how much work the boys have put into the sport to get as close to having it really pay off as he did only to wash out. Successful? Sure by normal player standards, but I doubt he thinks so.

  4. The problem with Jared's career is he plays a role that every team NEEDS to be a successful, and there's a lot more competition for those roles than the ones the other three brothers were able to carve out for themselves. Though I guess one could argue Jared was in the same position but was better able to sell Pittsburgh on his skills.

Could you imagine all 4 on the same team when they were all active in their prime? Three lines of grinding your ass purple.

  5. I feel like 3 shots on goal, 12 hits and 2 takeaways (without and giveaways) is really not that bad for 2 NHL games…
I would have been okay with giving him another shot tbh.

  6. I actually watched these three bros play in Carolina when I was younger. Dang……. now I've got an intimate relationship with an ODR video.

  7. I imagine playing in Scotland has to be enjoyable. I suppose the pay isn’t much but it must be fun. I’d definitely do it. Probably the top that I could’ve ever made it to.

  8. I feel bad Jared never made it anywhere like his brothers

    Eric won a cup
    Jordan won a cup
    Marc plays in the nhl
And Jared got like 1 game with 2 of his brothers

These guys could’ve been the 4 archangels of the nhl and only 3 made it and that’s kinda sad 😕

  9. I watched him play a season for the Edinburgh Capitals, for sure he had skills and skated well, you could tell he played at the NHL and AHL. Not a pure scorer but he created good attacking numbers and chances for us. Where he was his best was face offs and penalty killing, he was one of the best in the British league that year in that role. He took time to take a photo with my kid and such a nice and honest guy. I really wish him all the best in his coaching career and gets back to the NHL in some kind of role one day.

  10. I feel bad for Jared. Think about it:

Eric is the greatest Hurricane of all time. He has 1,000 points, and is a member of the Triple Gold Club.
Jordan played 1,000 NHL games and won a Cup. He's only 33, he's still got a few years left in him.
Marc also played 1,000 NHL games.

Jared played 2 games only because Jordan and Eric lobbyed for him to be called up and the games were meaningless.

  11. A lot of people have no clue how amazing you have to be,just to play in 2 nhl games,& have a pretty long ECHL/AHL career.

  12. I really like how you broke down Jared's style of play and how he differed from his brothers, as well as the positives you brought to light in his career. It's so true, he still got to play in the NHL and that is an accomplishment in itself. Even though his kind of play is duplicable with other players who might have another element to their game — better skating, greater agility, etc. — it's still a role worth acknowledging.

  13. Can't help to wonder why he was never tried on the blueline. He's a big dude he might have made a solid defensive defenseman.
