When you talk about US Open night matches, it would be hard to top the masterpiece composed by Andre Agassi and James Blake in the 2005 US Open quarterfinals. For Agassi, this was familiar territory. For Blake, it was a brave new world, his first trip to the final eight of a major – and also part of an amazing comeback that in the last year had seen Blake recover from major health problems and the loss of his father.
Having grown up in nearby Yonkers, Blake was arguably the only player who could match Agassi as a fan favorite at the US Open. Blake produced lights-out tennis for the first two sets of their match under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
But Agassi countered to take the next two by the same score. The fifth was magnificent, the level rising as the clock passed midnight. In the end, though, Agassi squeaked it out, 8-6 in the fifth-set tiebreak. Well aware of what he and Blake had created, Agassi said immediately afterward, “One-fifteen in the morning … 20,000 people watching. I wasn’t the winner here, tennis was.”

The commentators for this match are annoying! Quit speculating and just call the match.
All my favorite blake matches he loses😩. AO 2008 he won a 5 setter vs Grosjean. The us open win vs donald young i think was 5 sets.l
Easily one of the greatest matches ever played!
El último gran héroe americano.
I read Andre Agassi and James Blake's books and in both, they said that they both entered the zone and it was a powerful match for both of them in each of their books!
I remember being in high school and watching this match live while being over at a buddy's place for a high school tennis team get-together. Watching this match with my whole tennis team live was wild!
I read Andre Agassi's book. I watched all the match. Amazing. Really amazing. Read the book! Inmediately! Is the best book I ever read!
Best mach in all tennis history.
I still dream of courts this fast to truly separate who can play and who needs slow courts
Lmao why they saying 35 year old like it's old. Federer is owning at 40
these two should get a time violation for taking too little between points xD
So much more fun to watch than US Open in 2021
Great match; commentators talk too much.
Vintage Andre love it . What a war , the commentary is terrible . Old man ? Have a word
What a great match. I somehow missed this one back when it happened, so it was great to watch the whole thing from start to finish. Great upload.
Stunning from start to finish.
@ 35 Agassi's focus, mobility and endurance are out of this world, hats off to Gil too
One of the best US Open matches ever, awesome quality of ballstriking on display and no time wasting from either player too 🙂
Is it me of these commentators just terrible at times towards Blake. I want really say it. U know where I'm going with this two cornballs.
i never forgot the one Point in the Tiebreak……I thought it is 6-5 for blake…and then the referee said 6-5 agassi, ….and this magic moment i never Forget….Agassi i love you men…
Thank you USTA for uploading this!! Agassi is my hero. What a timeless match! I enjoy this more than current gen tennis.
i remember seeing this live on tv. It was and is the best match i have ever seen

Back when coming back from 2 sets down meant something. Now since the mens side has had 3 great players and absolutely no one else capable of winning a tournament over the last 15 years, it happens every tournament
At what time is agassi screaming backhand wimner
Love this match!!!
Imo, had Blake won, I think he would’ve beaten Roger in the final
whodafuq is ythis flake of a commentator…totally biased against agassi and even called him an old man,,,,wtf
2005 was last year for agassi to achieve his previous heights & he tried his very best .Considering his form & fitness he done great job to challenge these new generation. But bad part was he meet young federer both times of US open final 2004/2005. If not federer at opposite side he could have win at least one slam in his last years.
"What Agassi have to do to win a point?". I don't know, maybe go to the net during one of the 34 shots that put Blake in trouble.
Huge match by the way.
Remember watching this yep I was a huge Agassi fanboy and this match was one of his best hands down.
Blake played everything better except backhand.
But he was just attacking , thats why he lost.
If he would play intelligent , he would win
Andre lived rent free in Blake’s head in the 5th
I watched this live. Blake came out as hungry wolf in the early sets
I remember this match very well. Andre at 35 coming back from 0-2 down to win what a performance
#Blake played superb forehands, serves and backhands, but even though he could'nt defeat the Magician #andreagassi
My admiration to both, enormous players.
