On this episode, the Nick’s discuss the Pittsburgh Penguins rough trip to the desert over the weekend, culminating with an infamous “own goal” from Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin in Arizona (3:38). They discuss the Penguins lack of urgency and execution out west and where it leaves the team.
They also discuss where those performances leave Penguins President/GM Kyle Dubas with only two games remaining before the All-Star break (19:12). The guys finish the episode by discussing the apparent disconnect between Erik Karlsson and Evgeni Malkin and why one of them needs to be removed from the top power play (43:07). Tune In!

Yea and karlsson got reamed out by sully to cause karlsson is the worst to join the pens.. take karlsson off the powerplay hes not doing anything and sully chewed him out right and cant play defense

* malkin off pp1 for letang or pusti
I disagree with you saying the pens donāt give up. The penguins give up. They gave up after one goal in Vegas (which if baffling). This is a coaching thing, and Iāll scream it until it happens. Both Sullivan and Reirdan need the boot, bc this is on them.
These guys stink. Sell everyone now. Get a first + player for Jake, a first + player for Karlsson, and a bag of pucks for the res of the crap. They are losing with these guys, when they should be competing for the top of the division. Drastic changes are needed. Like a coach that is capable of telling them to cut the horse shit cute plays that haven't work forever. and choose to possess the puck over trying to make cute passes thru 3 of the opponents legs that never works.
Completely agree re: 11:30 ish – I actually turned off the game after the third Arizona goal immediately after Sidney tied it. They were playing so poorly it already felt like that was the deflating thing they couldn't come back from, let alone what would happen later. And that clip of Sidney laughing on the bench after his goal, it was just too sad. Iām certain heās not the kind of guy to cultivate this atmosphere, but I truly wonder how any of these guys can go back to the locker room and even look him in the eye. But even as two wins there would have put them in a really good spot, they're still just as much in the race as ever as you said. Must be so exhausting to never get ahead though
They must enjoy being embarrassed, its become a habit.
The next few weeks will show if Kyle Dubas is truly a GM willing to come here and do what he was given the job to do, which is bring this team back to being cup contenders while not allowing personal feelings to shift his decisions or he is going to allow players personal feelings and loyalty and all that other crap still stand in his way as we watch the core age out until they decide to call it quits. Change is needed and has been for awhile. It was a great run and its been awesome to get to watch so many seasons of incredible runs but it is time to move on and start looking towards the future. The past is the past and we need to stop living in it and so does this team.
I disagree. There are players on this team that dont put the effort in. Changing Rust for Rackell on the #1 unit is not a significant change. Pulling Geno from the #1 unit makes a statement. Continuing to roll Graves with EK? Graves -3, EK-2 last night. This team just stops playing. They led the league last year in 11 blown wins (winning heading into the 3rd). Blowing leads is not poor execution, its lack of effort. Having 1 shot on goal in the 3rd against Vegas? They mailed it in after the 2nd period. Sully will bench Zahorna, Pusstinen, etc but he would never sit 71, 65, etc. They just get their next shift over the boards without fail. As Phil Bourque says "the team loves Sully, they respect Sully but they dont fear Sully and there should be a healthy fear." I am not saying Sullivan is a bad coach; i am saying the message is stale.
The sad part to me is that they give up leads almost right away. So basically even if we play great the other team just scores. We cant even win when the other team is taking it easy on us š
I am not all that excited about the Fenway group. They do little things that are cheap. For season tix holders, you can no longer go to the tix office and get a paper copy of your tix as a souvenir. But they will sell replicas tix(not with your seat #) generically at a later date. For promotions nights, they no longer give promos to everyone that has a tix for that game, only the first 10,000 attendees. They changed who has access to watch pens games as they negotiated a new deal with comcast. How do you grow the game if people cant watch the team?
call it knee jerk, but i say bring in a new coaching. What are we seeing this year from the coaching staff that we cant afford to lose? The team looks lost and its embarrassing to watch them play half the time. They are now the joke of the league after last night. We havent won a playoff series since Nixon went to China, what are we waiting to see from coaching? Shake it up, roll the dice, make something happen.
What does this team do about Malkin? He needs to be better, much better. How do they get more from him? How does the team get fundamental fixes from such seemingly fatal and mysterious flaws. How is the PP a struggle with this lineup? How?
This isn't a terrible lineup. They justaren'tt getting the results. The parts aren't adding up to the whole that should be expected.
Rielly Smith is a bust here. Malkin is having a bad stretch.
Erik Karlsson is all over the place. Ryan Graves hasnt given them the defensive acumen that was advertised.
But where is the problem?
All the players, yes. But it seems like something more mysterious that connects it all.
Im starting to think this is actually a coaching thing. But i have no clue how coaching has failed them. Has it?
Or is it really a tired lineup? Or both?
ya feel for Crosby gives 110% every game. And Geno invisible like a lot of other players on this team
Good analysis can't disagree boys, spot on!
I think at minimum Reirden needs to go. The PP is 31st in the league, whatever they're doing isn't working, defensively there's been too many lapses lately. It's time to make substantial changes. Malkin does need to get moved down to second unit PP.
Im not blaming Malkin, that was just how the entire team played since the third period of Vegas, like crap. They couldnt pass all night, why did they think they could pass in front of an empty net
Iām not a guy who says blow it up after every loss, but after seeing that last night I think itās time to trade off what you can and get as many assets and young talent as possible to rebuild this thing. This team isnāt going anywhere or beating anyone and nobody but Crosby is off limits.
Change MUST be made. Buy or sell, whichever. Who's running the ship……..Sully, Dubas, Fenway Sports??
woodcroft is available
I think itās time for Malkin to move to the wing. Only problem is that on this team they donāt really have the horses to move him out of that spot. Unless you bring someone else in or you try moving Eller there or possibly DOC.
If Sully and Rierden donāt go soon, This team is going to miss the playoffs.
