  1. he is a top 5 in the draft for sure so not that big of a bust in that sense. The thing is he was supposed to be the best by far and be a top player on the rangers so for that a definite bust. In a few years this could be different though because he is getting better quickly

  2. Laf has never had that PP time to bump his numbers like the other guys in that draft. Gallant used the 2nd PP as a transitional unit, so the majority of his PP goals came from him filling in due to injury, or getting a good look on the one rush that PP2 might have before going back to 5 on 5. Of note, he and the other kids (Chytil and Kakko) were as productive as Zibanejad at 5 on 5 last year, with dramatically less ice time. This is the first time that Laf has had real top line minutes, switching to RW, since he's been stuck behind Kreider and Panarin on the LW.

If he went to a team that was truly bad, he would be a top guy, but he went to a team that was just opening their window.

  3. JJ Peterka was second rd pick and has more points and goals this year, Peterka doesn’t play as much or play PP much.

  4. Here's a thought, instead of calling players "bust", why don't we call them "misdrafted" instead. Players don't choose the rank they are drafted in so, to let them shoulder the weight of meeting up to their draft rank is a bit unfair. Really, it should be the scouting staff that bears that responsibility. Maybe Lafrenière is panning out exactly how he was supposed to and it's the Rangers' scouting staff that is a "bust". Food for thought.

  5. Only Stutzle in that draft fits the bill of a star, and he went number #3, so the Rangers had a 25 to 33% chance to get it right and whiffed. Will be interesting to see how the contract extension talks go. If the player and team are on the same page regarding his value.
