Yeah but what about another bubble season because of Covid-28?

After the last few games I really couldn’t agree more.

I hope I’m wrong, but the way this team has been repeatedly built over the last two decades shows some huge issues.

No one can predict the 2024 cup, I’m not too worried.

IMO the window really only opens once Gallagher and Anderson are gone (they’re both top 10 worst points/$ in the league this season). That’s 27-28 season. We will have Suzuki and Caufield signed until 29-30 and 30-31 at their current contracts which should be favorable given projected cap increases. Slafkovsky should be around his prime by then, and whatever other prospects from years 2021-2024 may start having some value to the team (in particular lane Hutson and reinbacher, if they hit as expected).

Honestly, 12% seems overly optimistic to me, but that’s because the cutoff is a bit unfortunate (just at the start of our window). The challenge will be to spend to the cap efficiently without overpaying too much for a UFA (hard to do in Montreal).

I know he prefaced his article by saying he knows he doesn’t know but like that’s exactly it. I understand the point he’s outlining but it feels a bit ridiculous to make a cup odds article for 2028

  7. This team needed to fully commit to the tank last year even if it was just for 1 year, especially if they knew they had no plans of drafting Michkov

We are just praying for some lottery luck at this point

I already said it many times, I say it again here: Habs win the cup in 2030.

Probably a hot take, but I really have a hard time to believe that with Hutson, Reinbacher, Guhle, Mailloux, Engstrom, Harris, Struble and Xhekaj, the Habs won’t be able to compete. I get the lack of elite talent on offense, but with a defense like that, considering Hutson and Reinbacher hit and the others develop normally (no superstar, just good NHL players), they will help carry a lot of offense which often have a lot impact during the playoffs.

Plus, it’s obvious HuGo don’t want to replicate the Oilers-Sabres models, and want to do something different. Will they be clear-cut contenders for 6 years straight? Maybe, maybe not, depends on draft and luck, but I firmly believe that they will be solid playoffs performers.

  11. I mean yeah, they also won’t win it in my lifetime. Without a miracle this team will always be mediocre.

I am highly optimistic about our future D core. I think we have enough potential in that group to be competitive on both sides of the puck but we are certainly lacking that premier offensive talent.

I may be delusional but I think if we can get that one elite offensive talent everything else will fall into place.

We need to hit on a few more draft picks before we’re in any kind of cup conversation. The next two years are our opportunity to do that.

True or not this mirrors my feelings about where team is headed. I hope to be wrong, of course, but I fear that none of the young players we hype so much would be the difference maker that is name-dropped around the league every time elite player is mentioned

I don’t get people saying we won’t go anywhere without a star player. If we look at the cup run it’s easy to see we didn’t really have one standout player, or line even. All 4 lines produced equal value in points/pressure/defence. And looking back at all recent cup winners, although they did have star players they really had depth through all 4 lines. Honestly looking at top heavy rosters such as a Toronto or the oilers and their lack of playoff success, I would rather depth than star power.
