The Canucks UFA Conundrum | Halford & Brough

Halford & Brough debate which of the seven Canucks UFAs should target this off-season, with the understanding that they won’t be able to afford all of them. The exercise is which two would you pick, since you could make an argument for re-signing all seven.

  1. This is why I have zero interest in trading top picks or prospects for rentals. Everyone thinks this is the year, but it’s the first time they’ve been this good in over a decade. Sacrificing the future for now is what got the Canucks in trouble in the first place. I was fine with the Zadorov trade because it was only a 2nd and a 3rd, which isn’t good, but it’s passable. I’d be furious if they traded a 1st and a top prospect for a winger, because at that point, it’s win or go to hell. I’m tired of having a run every 20 years and immediately watching the team fall off a cliff. I want sustained success. You can’t have that if you’re bringing in rentals you can’t resign. And if you don’t win anything, you have nothing to show for it. It’s like someone taking pain medication and when the first dose works, they’re tempted to take more because if one felt good, two will be even better. Then you’re passed out on the floor and when you wake up, your head hurts and you don’t know how you got there. That’s the Canucks recently.

  2. Joshua and Blueger, gotta reward our second line by keeping them together.
Would be nice to get Myers back but he's earned his pay day this year.

  3. Rutherford has a plan. As the media proved they don't have hockey minds. They have a plan. I wonder if you ever seen a team with 4 or 5 solid core pieces win more than once?

  4. Blueger and Joshua have been the most valuable players this year, and are young enough that they should be at least as good for the next couple of years, so sign each of them to 3m X 3.
    The rest are replaceable

  5. Now we finally have a " Descent", team…the idea that the lay of the land is that we are unable to keep them because they all think they are worth millions is sickening !

  6. Joshua and Blueger I think need to stay. That line has been a key part of Canucks success this season. Would really suck to see Lafferty and Zadorov go but I think they’re a step down in priority. Casey Desmith is a great goalie. Hard to pick

  7. Bluegar and Zadorov, it's not that hard. Silovs can replace Desmith. Podz or Baines can replace Joshua. The other or Lekkerimaki can replace Lafferty. Myers is replaced by Juulsen, Cole can be replaced by another replacement D man.

  8. Good new is next year Myers contract is up plus cap is increasing. I think Cole is making too much for what he brings so takes a pay cut or leaves. That’s over 10 mil right there. Petey takes 12-12.5 which is a 5 mil increase. Hronek takes 8 mil that’s like 4 mil. Sign depth pieces for around 1-2 mil each. There is the OEL buyout to worry about though
