Swedish hockey analyst Uffe Bodin on Lekkerimäki, Pettersson, Allvin, Höglander, Lindholm & Canucks

Uffe Bodin covers hockey in Sweden and has been talking about a lot of #Canucks on his podcast lately. He says the best fit for Calgary centre Elias Lindholm would be the Canucks, and explains why. He gives us his take on whether Elias Pettersson will sign an extension, comments on the work of Patrik Allvin (the first Swedish GM in NHL history), tells us why he’s not surprised with Nils Höglander’s progress, and forecasts the Canucks future for Jonathan Lekkerimäki.

  1. One theory on why Pettersson hasn't signed yet is because he's doing exactly what he said he'd do. It's not like his value is going to go down even if he gets injured. It can only go up and up and up especially with a Stanley Cup. It's an assumption the team is giving him a blank cheque because maybe he wants to see if he can be the highest paid player in the league.

  2. I know when you talk trades I see a lot of guys on expiring contracts who would cost assets and need to be resigned at a point in time where we are seeing contracts at the beginning of a contract cost bump. What about looking at players on teams that may be sellers who have recently signed deals that will be below market value going forward. When I did my look around the league the name I came up with was Dylan Strome – just signed a 5 year 25m deal with Washington. Is 26 years old and is a low end number 1 high end number 2 center. I would rather overpay a bit for a cost certainty player like that. To me, he seems to fill the hole that Bo Horvat had as a 5m center. I will admit, I have not watched him play and really need to, but I am also trying to see if there are players who would fit the mold for Tocchet's system and could benefit from having this coaching staff help to take them to a new level.

  3. Petey will resign. Worst case he gets an offer sheet and they match. Or they decide to let him go and receive 4 first round draft picks. The teams that could afford a 12.5m offersheet are bottom feeders. It's a win win for the Canucks. Offer sheets are rare.

  4. He seems not to want to stay. So it would be prudent to start testing the waters to what the trade market would bring
