How terrifying is the Leafs current goaltending situation?

Gino Reda and Bryan Hayes discuss the current problem the Leafs face in net and what could be done moving forward.

  1. They keep saying “too soon”, but many NHL goalies had their initial starts in the NHL at the age of 22. “Let us see what Squirt does flying solo”.

  2. How Terrifying is this TSN commentary?, let's wait and see, maybe the kid's the next Rinne. I really hope that he makes you jack asses eat your words.

  3. It's as simple as this:

If they pay the big bucks for a goaltender, Nylander becomes functionally impossible to keep.

This season is, I hate to say it, already pretty much a bust. If they turn it around, great, but they won't be contending for the cup with what we're seeing. They're a shadow of what they were last season. So, with that mindset, I say they keep working with Sammy and don't make any moves related to goaltending, then do anything they can to keep Nylander, who is just getting better and better and could win them a cup. He fits the team so well. I think Woll may be ready for a a regular season starter position next year assuming he comes back strong in the coming month or two, Jones has proven he can fill in though he's not a long term option. But we know Sammy can be a good goaltender, so if they can get his head back in the game that's the best option. He doesn't need to be amazing, he just needs to be good enough for long enough to let Woll and Hildeby get ready for what I agree could be a very interesting tandem (though it might become hard to keep both if Hildeby turns out to be a star).

  4. Anyone else find it a bit weird that they’re talking about Martin Jones as if he’s 40 years old or something?

  5. Good chance they're just going to sit tight until Woll is back and go from there, in the meantime play the wheels off of Jones and see if the other rookie can put up some good numbers. They're really gonna have to play some tight defensive games while starting Jones/Hildeby though that's for damn sure.

  6. The Leafs haven’t budgeted for a #1 goalie – by overpaying their forwards. So really the Leafs are getting the type of goaltending they planned for over the years. The Leafs are pretending they are in a “win now” position – which is fun and interesting. This Core peaked the year they won Division and lost to the Habs in the playoffs. It has been all downhill since then.😀

  7. They need to fire Keefe. They need a defensive style coach with fresh ideas and a new voice. Keefe is NOT a playoff coach. It's not just about a goalie and defense problem.

  8. It’s not the goaltending that’s scary.
It’s the lack of production from Treliving.
It’s time to move Nylander and add some serious depth.

  9. not at all we have Jones who has been solid a young goalie we are giving a shot and when Woll comes back he's been great almost all year. Am i missing something here?

  10. Leafs are not a contending team in the playoffs, and with Willy leaving for Chicago next season it’s not looking like a good future with the current core.

  11. I love how the Leafs have a slump every season, just like how every team has a slump every season for over 100 years but the Toronto media: it's ARMAGEDDON!!!!!

  12. Maybe The amazing Sheldon Keefe will do something revolutionary and put Max Domi in net. Maybe get some of the defence playing forward and sone of the forwards playing defence. Maybe get Mathews, the leagues number goal scorer blocking shots on the penalty kill because, well, Keefe is such a amazing coach🐑💩

  13. The current situation is no different than last season and the season before that and the season before that.

  14. Bad take. Rather than diverting precious resources to goaltending, give the rookie a chance to prove himself. Don’t panic. Ride Jones for the next few weeks until Woll is back.

  15. Treliving's offseason was unremarkable, of all the signings he made why didn't he think it might be a good idea to get at least one defenseman capable of playing defense… then again, that's been our trouble for what, 20 years?

  16. Just the old BS toronto media narratives to get clicks and views and piss people off. Martin Jones is 5-3 with 2 shutouts and a 0.926 SV%. Top tier goaltending and just shutout a great Kings team in their own barn. He has also played 453 career games with a relatively decent 0.906 lifetime, with tons of experience and don't forget 63 playoff games with 2 deep runs and a 0.917 in the postseason. Not only does he have experience, but he simply won't be phased by the regular season, he has been there done that as a full time starter. As for the load, he played 60+ games for 4 straight seasons – durable and effective.

He is more than fine to carry the load and this was a fantastic move by Treliving. He is also motivated to not go back to the AHL and play his way to staying here full-time. He's already done that but unfortunately people can't see through the fake narrative that he's an old 3rd stringer. Can't believe EDM didn't claim him off waivers earlier (I guess they had/have Pickard but he is a downgrade).

Absolutely zero to worry about. If he gets hurt, then it might be terrifying. Until then, Leaf fans should quite honestly be excited for this guy between the pipes.

Edit: Also Geno is so stupid. Jones, 33, in the twilight of his career. But Bobrovsky is 35 and playing every game. Crazy dumb comments by Bryan too. Season is saved buddy, it's Jonesey with all that playoff experience. Him and Woll is an unreal tandem. Worst case you start Hildeby who's been great with the Marlies. Wasn't a big deal playing Sparks a full season or Kallgren either. See what he's made of against the Ducks, and ride Jones until Woll comes back, then you can go 1A 1B. There isn't a problem here.

  17. Gino should know better. NO issue with goaltending. Martin Jones is the answer 9GP 5 W 2SO .926SV%. His career #'s are really good. Woll comes back and plays anything near respectable – we are good
