There Will Be an Emotional Homecoming Tonight for New York Islanders Coach Patrick Roy

New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy will have an emotional homecoming tonight as he returns to Montreal where he started his Hall of Fame career. Despite all the attention and emotion surrounding this moment, Roy has a surprising attitude about the game.

We also discuss the struggles of defenseman Adam Pelech. Since his return from injury, he has not played up to his usual standards. In fact, he wasn’t playing up to those high standards before he was hurt.

And we have a full preview of tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. What do the Isles have to do to earn two points?

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. I think habs flirted with roy as coach. Roy would have coached habs in that hot bed. Isles will probably resemble those mid late 80's early 90's roy hab teams. Played solid d with great goaltending average forwards. Probably more like '86 hab cup winner. That team shut down opponents in playoffs including flames once they got down 1-0 in finals. Habs still had the vet holdovers from '70's cup teams like gainey and robinson, d stalwart Carbonneau, chelios on d, and got just enough scoring out of leading scorer naslund to win. Isles are built to win on d end. They need to get back to that. Roy will straighten that out. pk already better. He wont have isles play stifling style like early trotz years. Roy will be more aggressive and cut down on those shots against so sorokin can make less saves. He just wont tolerate laziness and guys not picking up their man. Lazy players like 18 will be sat down. A vet team like isles shouldn't even need that reminder especially after four trotz years. Somewhere under lame-0 they forgot that basic principle. Roy will remind them of that. Still have to see if st. roy will give 26 one last shot or just keep 26 healthy scratched until he can be thrown in on that deal still to come with that first. And st. roy won last years memorial cup going 4-0 because remparts played the best d there and shut three opponents down. Same thing should happen with isles. Despite lame-0 effort isles aren't an offensive machine. Need to get back to d style and go from there. If they can isles will get in. nj has no goaltending, pens d is shit, tb has no depth/shaky d. Wings can and will make move to get in. Isles probably wont catch det.
And that is why louzer has always been infatuated with habs. Lemaire, L. robinson, burns, julien, roy as coaches. Traded for richer, c. lemieux in nj. Something about habs and their detail to d back in the day that louzer loves. Back in the day when habs ruled nhl if you didn't play d you didn't play for habs.

  2. Gil- I agree w you about Pelech, he hasn't been the same since that concussion last season. My thinking is that it's either lingering symptoms or that maybe the same desire to play is not there anymore. Head injuries, unlike a broken bone or torn ligament, are very unpredictable. As someone who wears Pelech jersey to every home game, I'm very concerned.

  3. Gentleman that’s class and humble, it’s not about me, it’s about the team, I’ve got a question, you have contract players that are a liability when on ice, what do you do with them ( Scott Mayfield ) ? Great show Gil spot on thank you LGI !!!!

  4. I must admit i have lowered my expectations for this season, the Team has gotten old fast and unless the GM can flush 3-4 over paid underachievers, i don't know that the step up in Coaching can work with the ageing starters on this roster….Hope i am wrong!

  5. Gil, I ve heard enough of Patrick Roy. I think berube would have been a better choice for coach. Especially with our roster being very similar to the blues. But senile Lou is just trying to buy himself more time. I still don’t think there will be any changes to the roster with Lou here know matter what Roy says. Like I said in the past mayfield,Pelech, pulock all have regressed since the BUBBLE! Surprisingly pulock has been the best of the three. Pelech hasn’t been the same since the all star selection. Know need to make excuses for him because we all know Father Time is undefeated and Adam looks done!

  6. Good morning team. I hope everyone is having a wonderful Thursday. Gil, I agree. I'm betting this will be an emotional homecoming for Roy. Starting with Montreal as a rookie, and winning two Stanley Cups. Same could be said for when we play Colorado again. He won two Stanley Cups as well, and coached the team, winning the Jack Adams award! All that being said, he is now a New York Islander. I'm anxious to see how he handles this game tonight. I'm sure he'd like to bring his A game. Montreal playing a few games under .500 hockey, we would love to see two points here. Everyone, have a great day! Looking forward to discussing this game tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  7. Nice episode Gil.
I've been waiting all season for Pelech to get in the groove. I can't remember a single game where Pelech impressed me with his wrap around poke checking and cool headed decision making. I think it has to do with all the injuries. I posted in the past that those being injury prone has to do with a lack of conditioning. We see it a lot with young prospects who haven't developed the muscle mass and the bone density that comes with developing strength. Pelech weighs 210, but he's also 6' 3". Who knows, but he's taking way more hard hits this year, which may mean the opposition see's a weakness and are breaking him down. Too many times I see him slow to get up after a hit. He just isn't the same Adam, and that is disastrous for the Isles.

  8. I agree with Roy's mindset about his trip to Montreal. Make it about business, not about nostalgia. He already made about nostalgia when the night the Habs retire his number. He's going to keep it about business and that's the way he should be.
