Wyatt Johnston picks up three assists in the 2nd period in en route to a four goal period to lead the Stars over the Detroit Red Wings. Johnston is making a huge impact since moving to the top line along Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson. In four games together, the trio has already combined for 20 goals! Johnston has elevated his play and making the most out of it, at 5 on 5 last night he led the Stars in CF%. Roope Hintz scored twice and has also been on a tear recently, this trio is quickly becoming one of the best lines in the NHL. Joey gives credit to Pete DeBoer moving Johnston and getting him back on track after a slump in the first half. The next segment focuses on the not so positives, the Stars almost blew a three goal lead in the 3rd period. Detroit hung around and bad penalties allowed the Red Wings to go 3-for-4 on the power play and come close tying the game. The inability to lock down defensively and shut down teams is concerning and something that will cost them when it matter most. Unless the address their defensive issues, they will have to score four to five goals a night to make life easier. The four game road trip all in all was good and the Stars took five out of the possible eight points up for grabs. The final segment focuses around Miro Heiskanen and what looks like his imminent return, Craig Smith was is still out after suffering an injury in New York and an outlook moving forward. Also, which pieces or assets do the Stars are they willing to move off of in order to upgrade the defense and make themselves a true Stanley Cup contender.

Last night marked game 30 with 3+ GA (goals against) for the Stars.
GF: 3rd in NHL, GA: 16th in NHL, while maintaining 7th in goal differential.
The silver lining is the margins are slim. Being middle of the pack with GA tells me the defense doesn't need a complete overhaul, and a little boost to the defense could go a long way. Going from 16th to 10th would require just 10 fewer goals in 45ish games, which would boost their goal diff up to 3rd in the league.
Those stats aren't the end all be all of course. However, Dallas dropped from 2nd regular season to 8th in the playoffs, while Vegas climbed from 11th to 1st.
Wyatt saved Hanley’s final second screw up.
My concern on that game was the number of turn overs, the clearing of the puck was incredibly weak. Hawk was playing flat footed. I’m chalking it up to road fatigue.
Earp was a beast along those last-minute boards last night! He probably preserved that win by himself right there. Jake is getting beaten often on the high glove side. I hope we don't take to calling him Slow Hand. I don't recall this being a problem last season. I wish the schedule was not so compressed. I feel like it is hurting the game, with exhausted teams getting blown out a lot more often. Too many back to backs.
