[Mercogliano] Have an update now: The fears about Chytil have been realized. Heard from a source it’s a setback directly related to his previous head injury. There’s obviously a hockey side to it, but concerns about Chytil’s well-being are at the forefront of everyone’s mind. #NYR

Fuck… this is a lot less speculative than what we saw before.

  2. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

    So sorry, Filda.

  3. obvioussponge06

Sounds like it’s time to hang em up to me.

Drury needs to be on the phone looking for a permanent replacement ASAP.

  4. shades of michael sauer.

hang em up kid. too young and a lot of life left to live. hockey is an afterthought.

  5. RhynoSorceress

Get better Fil, your health is far more important than hockey at this point.

  6. eidanoosh

Really feel for him, and he was flying high prior too.. get well Fil

  7. JPmoneyman

If we find out he collided with Phantom Jake I’m gonna lose it.

  8. BreakdownGhost

This is absolutely terrifying if he just collapsed with no contact.

  9. Superrandy

I feel so awful for him. Obviously I am not a doctor, but it sounds like it may be time to shut it down for the season at least. Take more time with no pressure and reevaluate in the summer.

  10. iamdanabnormal

Craig Conroy in Calgary is licking his chops because you know that Drury is going to be placing a call his way regarding Lindholm

  11. Way beyond the obvious concerns and priority of Fil’s health, the fact that this had to happen to the one bright spot in a rough stretch of Rangers 1st round picks is just beyond cursed

I’m just glad he got paid. Little did we know it’d be a last contract when we thought it was one of maybe 3 extensions he’d get with us. I hope he can possibly learn from the Euro scouts and get a job within the organization.

The rangers atleast know now. They can use the Space to address an immediate need. And with so many teams near the cap, having the space will likely drive down the cost of doing business.

But the team is going to absolutely have to address getting a cost controlled third line center in the off-season, which is probably going to cost one of Miller or Schneider (plus picks in his case).

  13. silverprayer

absolutely heartbreaking given how hard he’s worked. obviously can’t speak for the rest of his career (fingers-crossed he has a long and productive one), but it feels like it would be grossly irresponsible to put him back on the ice this season. his quality of life needs to come first.

that said, drury really needs to pick up the phone and start seriously looking for a legitimate replacement. the team is running on essentially one working C right now and it’s not going well.

  14. If he was on ice for minutes after something happening while in a no contact jersey, then I hope for his sake he quits now. Imagine if he got a big hit at game speed, devastating!

Take care Fil, life comes first!

  15. Itscominrightforus

A setback that took him 10 minutes to be helped off the ice sounds like a full on unconscious moment. No way he’s playing hockey again.

  16. MarsHotelSouth

Not trying to be overdramatic but words genuinely can’t do justice to how badly I feel for Chytil.

Obviously no player deserves this, but it’s just heartbreaking that it happens to the guy who’s an extremely hard worker, never once complained about being sent to the AHL or buried in the bottom six, consistently the last one on the ice after practice. It just really fucking sucks. And it sucks for all of us as fans, there’s no Ranger I enjoy watching play and progress in their game more than Chytil.

But most of all it sucks for him. I feel terrible. There’s no doubt in my mind that he wanted to be back ASAP to help this dumbass struggling team and possibly even pushed himself too hard. Now another setback. Just is awful all around

  17. AbeFromanfromChicago

Absolutely horrible and feel horrible for Fil. He did things the right way and was starting to be rewarded because of it. His hockey career is the least important thing right now, his health is.

It’s really not worth it considering what can happen if he gets another concussion. I have zero doubt the organization will help him stay in the game, if that’s what he wants, and transition.

Feel really horrible for the guy.

  18. callmesnake13

I hate to be the idiot backseat driver fan who knows nothing about medicine but still weighs in – BUT – how the hell did he make it all the way back from Czechia to here only to have this happen so quickly? Surely he was being rushed if this happened.

  19. This is the worst news we could have hoped for, the fact that he may have collapsed from concussion symptoms is scary as fuck.

But i know we can all say, thanks vince. Finally the beat writer that has a fuckin clue. No idea how we have so many beat writers and only one was able to fuckin detail literally anything

  20. NYMullets

Absolute goddamn shame. He’s put in so much work since the injury, and just when things look like they might be positive… poor guy can’t catch break.

  21. PaulMarnersFurHat

Hopefully this is an LTIR Kucherov ploy. Jonny Lazarus said that Chytil was favoring one leg when he made it off the ice. What if the concussion claim is just not true? And is to keep the league from being suspicious so that we can keep Chytil out until the playoffs? I think this is a real possibility. That way we can add a bonafide star RW at the deadline and not have to worry about the cap. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if today’s injury had nothing to do with the concussion and they’re just saying it is.

  22. Cherepanov, Sauer, Chytil — Dead is obviously the worst case. Filda is not coming back and I wish him well.

  23. Smorgas-board

This sucks. He had just broken out and looked like a key guy for the future and it’s gone like that. Has to look forward to his quality of life instead of trying to come back, he shouldn’t risk his future

  24. Fil has been one of my favorites since he was drafted. I really feel for him, and just hope he’s able to live a relatively normal life at this point. He’s only 24 🙁

  25. bunt_traume

Worst case scenario. Poor Filip man. Hope he’s okay. If he can’t skate anymore I hope he gets a spot in some sort of fulfilling career. He doesn’t deserve this shit. Fuck.

  26. InevitableHome343

Better to learn in practice compared to in game. Protect this kids brain – this is the most important thing.

What I have questions about is…. How did this setback happen here? And not in his hometown training? I REALLY hope he didn’t get collided with

  27. HereticsSpork

Shit. That’s fucking scary and the potential risk of another concussion likely means he ain’t ever going to play again. This is as bad as Sauer.

I’m sad for him. I hope he recovers from this and lives a healthy and long life.

  28. kiddocontay

This really sucks. I hate to see it for Fil. I’m sure all he wants to do is be out there on the ice with the boys, but it’s time to hang it up. Health comes first.

Just as things were starting to get going for him too. Had aspirations of NYR’s 2C for years to come. Here’s to life beyond hockey. Time to be with family. Life is too short, and hockey isn’t life.
