Do we really rely on goaltending so much that we can’t win without it?

I know goaltending is a huge part of the game but teams are winning with not the best in net. All 3 of these teams have won at least 7 of their last 10, have at least 26 wins on the season and are all in playoff position. Colorado actually has 32 and their backup has worse stats the Georgiev. It seems like when our goalie isn’t good, our team does not compensate for it they just throw in the towel and play like garbage too and I don’t get why.

Yes. It is no different than the last core relying on Hank. These pathetic sacks of shit couldn’t even win a series last spring in which their goaltender put up a .931 sv%.

  2. Yes and no. For the last few years, this team has relied on goaltending and an elite powerplay. Our recent massive slump has much more coincided with the PP going ice fucking cold than a particular goaltending slump (though obviously it doesn’t help, but that’s been going on longer—it just got *even worse*).

Basically, it doesn’t matter if your goalie gives up 2 goals or 6 goals—if you only score 1, you’re gonna lose.

Do modern NHL teams need elite goaltending to be good? No, not anymore but this rangers team is built around having the best goal tender in the league so the Rangers do need elite goaltending to be good. When teams scout us or play us the #1 thing they should worry about is Igor and this season he probably isn’t even on their radar.

This is a team that wants to win hockey games 2-1 3-2. We cannot go goal for goal with teams the rangers know that and our opponents know that, so Igor playing bad is a death sentence for this team.

Absolutely. It’s virtually impossible for a middling team to be carried to a cup by an elite goalie. Goalie isn’t an afterthought position by any means, but you don’t need a top 5 guy to win a cup (eg, Adin Hill). That part always starts with depth. I’d argue that in a capped league you don’t even really want to be locked into a goalie who commands a huge contract with term. That money needs to be spent on quality skaters.

When your 5v5 play is bad, you can either rely on your goaltending and special teams to save your ass or you you can be a mid team. Looks like we’re a mid team.

  6. First let’s start with the two teams that have won. If you had a choice of Mackinnon, Point, or Mika, who you taking? Kutcherov, Rantanen, Panarin who you taking? Makar, Hedman, Fox, who you taking? Honestly both centers are significantly better. Kutcherov is the best winger, I put Rantanen and Panarin as a give and take but a slight edge to Panarin as I dont know if Rantanen can put up close to his numbers playing with a second rate center the way Panarin has. Makars the best defenseman in the league, if Im building a team for one season Id take Hedman Id take Fox.

As for Dallas and Carolina they are just like us. Good players but not the best of the best for position. Forget about our recent play, the reason why were still ahead of Carolina is their goaltending struggles early in the season. Look at Jake Ottengers Jekyll and Hyde numbers in the playoffs and how that directly affects their results.

this team did just fine without elite goaltending in the first half of the season

Our offense has died yes. But trust me if you think goes ugly behind our defense put him on one of these teams, 10 goals given up a night.

  9. This team is the perfect storm of shittiness rn. You can get by with subpar goaltending if your team is playing well, but unfortunately the offense, defense, and goaltending all suck rn

Didn’t realize Oettinger and Vasiwhatever were also having shit seasons. Is it just a bad year for goalies or what?

This post is ridiculous. You posted 4 teams. All of which have around the same points as us. 2 slightly above and 2 slightly below. Through the terrible stretch we’re still 1st in the division ahead of one of the teams you posted.

Igor has been awful over the last month+. I love him but that’s just a fact. .863 save percentage in January is terrible, especially for a top paid goalie. Worse than Jack Campbell bad and a mockery was made of him (rightfully so).

The team in front of him also can’t score for nothing right now but they’ve generally been outplaying the other team. It’s super frustrating when you can’t score but our controlling play. And then your goalie gives up a softy right away on the first chance. That’s been happening repeatedly. I don’t know what’s up with Igor but it looks really bad. He currently has ZERO reaction to anything happening in front of him. He positions himself and if the puck doesn’t hit him it’s a goal. That Kolesar goal last night was embarrassing for him. He has zero reaction to any tips or deflections also which we saw multiple times last night. He also seems unaware of the puck and what’s happening around him. The Ducks goal that was called off for offsides is one of the worst goals he’s ever given up. Luckily it was offsides. This is also the reason he’s giving up so many rebound goals. He’s has no reaction or control of the puck. It just hits him and goes wherever. He used to be Hank levels of great at controlling rebounds. That’s gone right now.

Quick also hasn’t been great of late but I’ll give him a pass for now since he hasn’t been getting enough starts.

Our defense isn’t as great as it was in the beginning of the season but the goaltending has been awful and once that returns to form we’ll start winning games at a high rate again. It’s really that simple.

Yes we were never really that great we just got absurd goaltending to cover up all the defensive meltdowns and ineffective 5v5 play. This is nothing new, it’s been like this for as long as I can remember

  13. Avs fan here. I think with Georgie, how he plays depends on how the team plays in front of him. Earlier this season they were making a lot of mistakes and I think frustration was taking over. These last few games they’ve seemed to clean up their game and he’s been looking more sharp.
