  1. beaulieu to buffalo for a 3rd, video coming up soon? montreal makes ANOTHER trade within the divison giving up a young dman. I've heard galchenyuk for hjalmersson and a pick is in the works as well, your opinion?

  2. Fleury to Arizona? Obviously he's not going to Calgary (thank god) but he would probably play great in a no pressure situation

  3. the offical deal is Mike Smith to Calgary 25% Salary Retained, Brandon Hickey, Conditional 3rd which turns into a 2nd if Calgary make the Playoffs, and rights to Chad Johnson.

  4. Since when did draft picks for playoff teams get ordered based off regular season points and not what round you got eliminated, I thought thats how it use to be? Maybe I'm wrong

  5. Goaltender Mike Smith was acquired by the Calgary Flames in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday for goaltender Chad Johnson, college defenseman Brandon Hickey and a conditional second- or third-round draft pick in either the 2018 or 2019 NHL Draft.

  6. I don't like the move for us. Calgary doesn't know what they are getting honestly. Mike Smith is a solid starter I'll miss him dearly because if Chad Johnson or Domingue is one of are starter there goes any hope the coyotes have at a decent season

  7. Chances are, Smith comes back ASAP because that's what our guys do. Vermette and Vrbata are big examples. There's a chance we get Fleury or Mason, but I'm pretty sure Smith will be back.

  8. I don't care where Steve Mason ends up. I just want the guy to get a starting role, he has earned that.

  9. Really all the Flames gave up was the conditional 3rd round pick. Johnson was a UFA, and Hickey wasn't going to resign with us come July 1st.

  10. Madsen from Harvard just got traded to Arizona and his college stats are freaking great so he's a possibility for a starter in the future

  11. If the Isles got the fisherman logo back I would be so happy. I think I'm alone on that opinion though.

  12. Chad Johnson's rights were part of the trade to Arizona as well, so it's unlikely he'll be back.

As a Flames fan, Mike Smith wasn't my first choice, but I still like the deal. Brandon Hickey has committed to his senior year at BU and made it clear that he wanted to test the market as a UFA. Plus, he's been passed on the depth chart by several other defenseman. Johnson's rights are basically nothing, and the 3rd rnd pick is fine, though it does become a 2nd if we make the playoffs (which would still be a win for us because we're in the playoffs).

Smith is a solid, veteran goalie who posted decent numbers behind a not very good Arizona team. I expect his numbers to improve behind Calgary. Plus, our plan seems to be getting Gillies or Rittich in as the back up this year, and Smith is a veteran who can be a great mentor for our young goaltenders until they are ready to take over in a couple of years.

So yeah, I like the deal. Good goalie for very little acquisition cost, and he's a guy who can both steal us a few games and teach our younger goaltenders how to play in the NHL.

  13. I don't think Smith will get another contract if he fails in Calgary. I'm willing to wait and see how it goes. Might be a good pick up for little to no risk

  14. Flames should have went for a better, younger goalie, trying these quick fix goalies won't do it, if you wanna go for a serious run you need a goalie that's better than Smith/Elliott

  15. I think Calgary should draft either Jake Oettinger, Stuart Skinner, or Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to try and bring up a young goalie instead of trying to patch with other teams old goalies.

  16. I don't think Smith is a bad goalie, but I do think he'll be negatively affected by any changes to the rules for goalie padding. I haven't kept up to date on how that's going to roll out, I just wouldn't want him on my team if it going to happen soon.
