Now that we know who the Hockey Canada 5 are, the Senators knew enough in the summer and fall of 2022 not to re-sign Alex Formenton while letting another player from the 2018 team keep playing How, exactly, did they know? Moreso, how did they know and not PHI, CAL, and NJ?

Look at the contracts. Everyone knew. The community is a small one.

To quote my famous post from yesterday…. John Bean’s son was directly involved in the case.

Flames knew. Did the PR people know? Maybe not but the hockey people definitely did.

Dude wants to be Elliot Friedman so bad. Only he gets to use CAL for us

  4. I mean it’s simple: Flames re-signed Dube in 2021 before this news (2022) broke.

I’m sure they would not have re-signed him to avoid the headache if the case was reported before then, same as the Senators.

Since Dube is on the payroll they just have to live with it.

The Flyers were trying to shop Hart all summer. No takers, not even the Oilers.

Formenton had 18 goals, 32 points as a 21 year old, then left for Europe and yet there was no interest from any NHL team in bringing him over.

    They knew.

… Batherson was signed in 2021, the news broke in 2022 when Formenton’s contract ended.

I said this on another thread, what realistically could the Flames do differently if they knew?

They signed Dube to a 3 year contract before the news broke. He was not convicted of anything, there were no charges, and there was no official confirmation of his involvement. They likely couldn’t have used a morality clause to terminate his contract. If the Flames knew the other 31 teams likely knew so it is likely they couldn’t trade him. They might have been able to waive him and send him to the minors but you probably don’t want a suspected rapist being a mentor to your young developing players. If they knew, I would expect they were waiting for the police to file charges or for the contract to end.

Philadelphia could have been in the same position with Carter Hart.

The big question would be what New Jersey knew. They extended both Michael McLeod and Cal Foot this last season. If they knew nothing I can understand this, if they mostly had unverified rumors this is still defendable, but if they had solid information it is surprising they didn’t let them go to free agency.

I’m not trying to point the finger at how Philadelphia handled the situation, but they are the only involved team where they would have had the option to do anything if everything was well understood.

As a devils fan, I would have to assume they knew of the chance they were involved but could only operate under the info they knew for sure which was basically nothing concrete but a lot of smoke. They have plausible deniability to say they didn’t know the specifics, but they were obviously aware of the potential so they sign one year deals and figured the truth would be out there by the time it came to sign a new one. So now it’s all out there and they’ll be out of the contracts.

  9. Assuming all nhl teams knew and didn’t want to have any of the suspected players. I’m wondering what you think the flames would do if this didn’t escalate now and dube was up for contract renewal. Do you think we would have resigned him or just let him walk?

  10. Who’s this goof? Does he not understand how contracts and timelines work?

NJ is the only team that signed after it broke and I’m assuming that’s why they only went with 1yr contracts.

Sens may have had more insider information with Batherson on the team and decided against even a short contract.

  11. The NHL did their own investigation that wrapped up months ago….. I believe it started before the Londen police reopened the case. How tighted lipped was the NHL towards the teams involved?

There’s a few people in another reddit thread mentioning that Dube is actually Player #1, wtf…. any truth to this, can’t seem to find anything elsewhere, they’re claiming they matched the birth dates of the defendants.

Why do people keep looking for other stories inside what happened

None of this is about how any NHL team “ handled” the situation, it’s only about 5 guys who raped a girl, that’s it that’s all

  14. It could also be a case Formenton being more open about the case to his agent and team. Maybe he felt a little more guilt about it, told them everything that was going on, and the potential for a future criminal charge. The other guys could have tried to harder to keep it under wraps until the last possible moment.
