Flames got a haul for Lindholm – 2024 1st, conditional 2024 4th, Andrei Kuzmenko, D Hunter Brzustewicz, and D Joni Jurmo
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the #Canucks have acquired F Elias Lindholm from the Calgary Flames in exchange for F Andrei Kuzmenko, D Hunter Brzustewicz, D Joni Jurmo, a first-round pick and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

Flames raking Kuzmenko’s contract to make the deal work gets a better return.
That is a huge overpay but if you’re the Canucks on this heater of a season – the expectation is truly cup or bust.
Losing Kuzmenko is rough already, but Brzustewicz too? AND a 1st + 4th?
The pressure is on for the Canucks to win the cup or they will lose this trade incredibly hard lmao.

For us, realistically, that’s Kakko, Fortescue, another prospect, and probably 3-4 picks due to Kakko not matching Kuzmenko’s output last season. All for a rental with just about zero chance at resigning in the offseason. We didn’t just dodge a bullet, that was a whole cannonball.
Sometimes being a good GM means knowing when NOT to make a deal. This is one of those times.
At one point the Canucks were named w/ Guntzel. But damn if this is their version of Cup or Bust, this is it.
The Rangers dodged a bullet. I didn’t want him. It probably would have involved Kakko which would lessen the Rangers depth at RW to…. old man Wheels.

Curious what Drury’s move is now, but Canucks just put the league on notice.
Drury rarely lets out any leaks, I don’t believe it just got out that Lindholm was “at the top of our list” and Kakko was on the trade block. Seems like this is one Drury let out and something like 24hrs later the Canucks offer a fortune for Lindholm. I honestly don’t believe Monahan is on his list either, but he might blow some smoke that way and you’ll see another contender like the Avs or Bruins spend their own fortune. I do believe however he’s not bluffing when he says Kakko is available but I think Drury’s business lies with Ottawa and Anaheim. Or maybe a big maybe Guentzel
Is Lindholm even that good? He has one 40+ goal career year but the rest seems very mediocre. 20-22 goals and 65 pts?
One extra thing to consider when comparing to what the Rangers would give up is that Kuzmenko is on the books next year for another $5.5M, so this gives the Canucks cap flexibility next year in addition to the trade. I think a better cost controlled player would lower the price, but it’d still be a lot either way I suspect.
Prices on Henrique, Monahan, *et al* just went way up…
