GBR React to Owen Farrell’s confirmed move to Racing 92

Hello Dream Team uh welcome along to a little special we have got a big show for you this week rounding up all of the headlines in the game of Rugby Union at the moment of which there are quite a few but as we were recording this week’s podcast perhaps the biggest headline of

All dropped and that is the news that Owen Farrell it is now confirmed has signed for rassing 92 he has signed a two-year deal he will join the Paris Club from July the 1st this year we wondered because James and I did a show I think it was about 10 days ago with

Johnny may we wondered whether well at that point it looked very likely then went very quiet and you wonder whether it was a bit of negotiation but the news is that he is off to Paris um and the gut reaction to that is I thought initially it was some skull duggery I

Thought if you if you’re going to leave a club that thought you would never leave what’ you do practically sign a deal in France then you paid absolute hanga um but he’s gone I think it’s an amazing opportunity for him I thought Finn Russell summed out very nicely as

My experience of France would tell you you’ve got to put everything you you think on hold maintain your personal standards Embrace everything what you think you know you don’t know um learn the language as quickly as possible to really really interact something I didn’t do as much as I should have done

Really my my is quite good actually well it depend pissed up it’s okay but um once you say v v Shar a few times bonjour um it sort of loses it its power but olle Phillips my my my housemate did it and and just the connections you get

Off the back of it I think when you’re when you’re steering a team you need to do that I think Owen will bring I think it’ll be brilliant for him I think he’s always been a sarson’s man I think playing in a completely different country with a in a different style with

Some amazing players will bring the best out of him I think his game will adjust because he has the skills to do that and I think he played type of rugby that suited the Premiership I couldn’t be more excited for him couldn’t be more excited for his

Family I think it’s utterly amazing um I think it’s sad that he won’t be playing with sah sad we won’t have him over for England but what an opportunity and I’m and I’m very impressed that he had The Bravery to do it because if you said wasn’t one man going to

Finish out his career at Harrison you’d say yeah is a one man who turned his back on England what for whatever reasons you would say it wasn’t Erin farell to do this I think shows maturity and I couldn’t be I couldn’t back him anymore would you agree with that it’s a

Very exciting step for it’s quite a sad I don’t think I don’t think it’s sad I think that you know it’s the right time for him to go and enjoy it he can still play for the British and Irish Lions whilst he’s playing over there you know

He’s taking a sabatical from England I think it’s a I think what this is telling is he just needed you know Wilco said the best thing about ton was he could just hide away you know it was just wasn’t that intense media Focus that Owen is constantly put under and a

Lot of the time unnecessarily whereas I think if in in Paris if he goes and shows you know what he does for sar’s week in week out it will be it will be thanked it’ll be lorded uh he’s you know the the team and the people he’s got

Around him with the likes of seer and uh the young other other young players yeah Henry arendel uh onean him off all these guys you know I think he’s just going to he’s going to love it and I think he’s going to live in in a nice little bubble

In Paris and he can you know he can slide on by enjoy his rugby you know two years time he can make his decision whether he wants to come back and go for another Rugby World Cup and you know and hopefully he’ll be ready to face that

The barrage that comes with that but um I think it’s great for him I think you know he’s really sort of taking a lead on what telling people what players are actually going through and actually trying to um educate people on how how hard it is and you know what as fans

What you need to do to actually support players and I think you know he deserves to go and enjoy himself he deserves to have a new challenge he deserves to have a a fresh take on life and hopefully it’ll make him a better player it will

Make him a more rounded I mean it’s a big big it’s a big step for him a northerner stepping over there over into into parisis wig into obviously sha Edwards has been a massive role in showing that a northerner can make it over there um and

I think you know best of luck to him I think you know if he wants to go for lunch at the place in Paris again I’m I’m more than well I’m I’m available for com through anytime soon you going to add something um my question was going to be do you

Think we will see him again in an England shirt you know what um I hope so because I think that sometimes in a career it’s nice to to separate yourself or not reinvent yourself but go into a different environment with a different challenge a different mindset different players around you different

Requirements it’s a very different lifestyle um you know playing in that incredible Stadium the politics the interplay the slight Madness that happens over there all of this will go go into the Melting Pot now some some really struggle you’ve seen some of these international players only ever

Last a season um and then have to come home I think Owen’s resilient and we’ve seen that and I think if his family settle and and I know he’ll embrace the club he’s OB obviously working with Stuart Lancaster which I think makes a big difference um between sort of his

Ability to indoctrinate himself with the way that rasley want to play he’s got good players around him I think he will come back a better player and I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see him playing refreshed you know maybe with just a little cigarette in a hole that doubt

That but you know what I mean I just I think it be quite yeah I’d love that imagine that just own a bar he just spoke everything of the French accent from now on it would be incredible how big a hole does this leave at sar’s because it sounds like

They’re about to go through a hell of a rebuild you know Maco Billy potentially looking at movie on MAR has obviously reigned but Owen go now as well yeah think Jamie George is obviously resigned but I think they’re doing a great job you know you look at the team that

Played on the weekend there’s a lot of fresh B is in there anyway um so I think I think they’re very good at doing that now obviously that that’s not underestimate that is a big hole that you’re leaving uh with Owen Farrell but we know you know Alex good has stepped

Up there and done a job for them before whether that’s going to be his long-term future probably not but you know they they have a way of they they’re a team that finds a way and I I think you know they’ve done smart things in the past you know when they went through

Everything they went through and they put players on loan and bits and pieces they’ve always managed to look after their players um so players want to go play for them and that’s the most important thing and I wonder how hard you know it’s not that hard I think for

Saron to attract an international 10 potentially they’ve got the budget you know we’ll see if they can do it 200 appearances for sar’s six Premiership titles potentially with more to come three European Champions cups Three Six Nations titles including a grand slam I think it’s there been a hell of a ride

To this point I mean he’s been instrumental in every single one of them you know he he he’s played his absolute heart out for that club you as a club you could you know the only thing you could do with Owen Farrell is wish him your best and go [ __ ] hell you’ve

Given everything for us you’ve done everything he was instrumental he’s created memories you know he he he was part of that club and Revival from you know when they were used to buy players and tried to create a team um in the days you know with Venta came in and

Moved the whole the whole process forward and Mark mcco done an amazing job they’re incredible Partnerships a bit like Tom Brady and um Bill bich separating let’s let’s see how we get us on was it Saron or was it Owen Farrell let’s see what happens I I think it’s a

Bit of both of them and I think owns do brilliant he has got cards to play before this season is done and before he makes his move to parisar obviously scrambling through uh into the last 16 the round of 16 in the European Champions Cup but that is the news that

Has broken is that Owen Farrell is off to rassing and to Paris in July on a two-year deal where he’ll link up again with st Lan the who gave him his England debut um lots of stories around the game as we said at the moment and we will get

Into all of that on the main show in partnership with our good friends at Continental Ts that is out on Wednesday in all your usual channels see you then

Owen Farrell will leave Saracens at the end of the season moving to the Top 14 league in France. He will be unable to play for England for the duration of his 2 year contract. Mike Tindall, James Haskell & Alex Payne react.

  1. He won't be paid as much as now ( sources says around 450000-500000 € a year, though nobody saw the contract), it's not the Eldorado like 10 years ago. But Paris is maybe too big for a quiet man like him, however i wish him the best at Racing 92. I hope he pulls up a Wilko.

  2. Great move by Lancaster. He now has his "Sexton" at Racing. He has a general on the field who will drive his vision.

  3. After all the grief he’s suffered at the hands of so called rugby fans, is it any wonder that Owen Farrell has decided that he’s had enough of the English rugby scene. Everyone will be sorry to see him leave Sarries and for the tenure of his time in France, England too, but it’s a well trodden path for great players as they head towards the the twilight of their careers; Wilco, Dan Cater et al, so true rugby fans will only offer their best wishes to Owen and his family.

  4. Best wishes to Owen and family. From what I have seen you had unjust criticism to someone that served England so well.
I have lived and worked in France for more than ten years so here is my advice. If you drive forget roundabout etiquette. Embrace the food and culture it is what the French do best. However if you are like me take a load of Patak's sauces and dark chocolate biscuits and your preferred tea bags. Your kids will be well educated as is most of the French population. Learn the language or at least attempt because hey it's worth it and it gives you a new skill. I wear an English red rose (sorry fellow Yorkies) on my back when I am in the factory where I work in Toulouse and it creates such a friendly banter very much like working in Blighty where you can be critical and friendly in the same breath

  5. Nothing but best wishes for Owen Farrell! May be the British media circus will realise how wrong it is to push all the wrong ‘personal’ buttons on social media and in the press! I hope he and his family will enjoy some peace in this amazing country that I am lucky enough to call home! 😊

  6. Great signing for them he’s an excellent player.I hope the unfair press he got played no part in it and the that he makes a good few bob.

  7. Don't blame him for walking away from England. It's one thing getting endless abuse from SA fans (even when their heroic captain constantly says what a great guy Farrell is) but the garbage and endless abuse from England fans is hard to understand. The prawn sandwich brigade who never rose above the ranks of their school 2nd XV always bang on about "he can't tackle, he's arrogant" etc but the truth is they've pushed one of the best players of his generation into turning his back on England. Good on Farrell and I hope Paris is good to him!

  8. One other Wiganer who has done rather well in France so far, is Shaun Edwards. Sure that will help him settle there too. Good luck Faz!!

  9. How come all these rugby players can go and work in France? As a chef I'd love to go, learn the language, learn the cuisine but can't seem to do it.

  10. Gutted to see him go as a Saracens fan, but no complaints about him going – he deserves a move like this. I still don't think you should write him off playing for Saracens/England again – he's signed a 2 year contract which leaves open him returning for a Last Dance at 34/35 yrs old – Sexton played until 37.

  11. RFU need to look at what they did with Anthony Watson and prepare to do that with other players. I think we are going to loose so many good players to France and it will cost us.

Happy for Owen, this is is the right decision.

  12. Good on Faz, media are rotten here. You have a limited shelf life as a player, go make hay while the sun shines. Might make the RFU look at their players playing abroad policy, probably not and just wishful thinking on my part that the dinosaurs in charge of English rugby will listen but you can always dream.

  13. I've nothing against OF at all. I always thought he came across as an alright bloke in his interviews and couldn't understand the negativity toward him personally. However, as a 10 I think his moment has passed. He had a period playing for England where he did a good enough job but he's hardly an 'electric' fly half or even that creative. After the 2019 world cup he went right off the boil and his last couple of games for Saracens have been error-strewn at best. We all ride a wave at times but that wave eventually hits the beach and the ride is over. Good luck to him at Racing, hope he makes a fortune and enjoys it but I can't see his style gelling with the French way of doing things. And, with all the respect in the world, I hope we never see him again in an England shirt. Time to look forward…

  14. GBR is the dominant scrum of podcasts 👍 I wish Owen Farrell all the best after giving his all to Sarries and England. As a Sarries fan I’m sad to see him go, but he’s been amazing for years and he deserves huge success. As for Sarries I’d like to see Marnie Libbock replace him, a good international player that Mark Mcall could turn into a great one. Let’s hope all the Faz haters can finally be silent now and then forgotten. Faz was and is a world class player.
    Cheers Faz

  15. Faz in the Paris suburbs in an Olympic year… Interesting. Hope he hammers some hate of defeat into this gang of insta starlets… Can't wait to hear his Geordie French à la Shaun Edwards… 😂

  16. Good luck to Owen, hell of a player. Him and stu meeting up ain’t good for us here in Leinster. But we rise to the challenge

  17. I’m English and I hope we’re shit in the 6 nations so people see what we’re missing and hopefully people will finally be honest about Marcus smith I.e he’s a very good club player
