  1. With Elias Lindholm, Vancouver got a valuable player who fits their needs, while Calgary avoided watching another valuable UFA walk into the sunset come the off-season. A multiple asset return gives the Flames' organization a lot to work with now and over the next few years. I'm leaning towards thinking that Calgary won this trade but only time and how useful those incoming assets are will tell the full story.
Meanwhile, if Lindholm is an integral part of a long Canuck's playoff run, the pendulum swings back towards Vancouver winning this trade.
Considering that this is new GM Craig Conroy's first major deal and it dealt with the potential loss of a UFA for nothing, I think he did very well.

  2. What if your a canucks fan that thinks we traded a bunch of mid prospects for a mid player?

  3. You can put me solidly in the overpay camp, but as you said, if we make the final or win the cup, it will have all been worth it. If we go out in the first round, and Lindholm walks, then this deal f**king sucks!

  4. Calgary fleeced this trade by a mille. I think giving up a 1st round pick for a rental is soo overrated. How many times have we seen teams trading their 1st round pick for a big name and failed to win the cup? Obviously Lindolm is a legit top 6, but he's not an elite caliber, and won't guarantee you a cup, let's be honest.

What I consider a legit blockbuster win are teams like the Jets and Oilers that hammered LA and Nashville in the trades. The Jets got Vilardi, Laffalo, and Kupari, all with still terms on their contract, and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.

The Oilers got a 6th round pick and a legit top 2 Dman in Ekholm who's been completely dominated with a +46 since he joined the Oilers with 3 years on his term, in exchange for Tyson Barrie and a first round pick.

Again, these are massive wins for Jets and Oilers because the players still got terms on their contracts, giving the team better odds of winning the cup for the next 3-5 years down the road, rather than risking a 1st/2nd round pick just for a rental

  5. Canucks win big time. This is all about acquiring one Elias to find success with another Elias and then signing both Elias’. That much should be obvious. This is no rental. This is apart of the master plan

  6. Did Kuz play 41 games with Canucks this season? I know he had some healthy scratches. That's the threshold to have your name on the cup if they do win it this year.

  7. this was a necessary evil and cap dump. canucks have to resign hronek, petterson, joshua, and blueger. they needed to dump 5.5M on next year's contracts. since this is a "go year", they might as well have loaded up on a 2C as opposed to picks which would have been contrary to their league standing intent.
it was a win for both teams, despite flames loading up on assets

flames totally won on hunter. canucks probably can't afford to re-sign lindholm.

  8. A great analysis of the trade. I am still pretty mixed on this trade as a longtime Canucks fan. While I love the prospects of the Canucks with Lindholm in the lineup, I am wondering if the Canucks gave up too much for what may only be a short-term rental. They say the sign of a good trade is when both sides are left reeling wondering wtf. This trade certainly meets that criteria.

Much love, respect, and best wishes to Kuzmenko in his hockey future with Calgary for his positivity and positive contributions to the Canucks during their tumultuous last season.

  9. Kuzmenko is a very skilled, fast and creative player and just loves scoring. That's all he really wants. He has incredible hands and vision. If given a big enough kitchen to cook, he can be very impressive and fun to watch. But Tocchet doesn't coach like that and he was constantly on his case to prioritize systems and forechecking and it just wasn't working. I really liked him and I hope Calgary is a better fit for his style.

  10. Jurmo is not a player, but Hunter is good. But he isn't going to make a team that has Quinn Hughes on it. He's also maybe the 6th best canucks prospect. Kuzmenko is the only piece I have to think about because he's crazy talented and can drive play. Tocchet wasn't going to use him but he can turn it around for sure.

  11. 1:17 Yeah, see I was initially a bit shocked at what the Canucks gave up for one player who wasn't even leading their team in scoring, but then I thought about where the Flames are sitting in actual scoring. They have no players who are a point per game, and the only player who is even close is Coleman. On the Canucks (as of Feb 1st), Coleman would be 4th in goals and 5th in points if he were on the Canucks roster. And Huberdeau is still embarrassingly way down their scoring list. There's a guy who probably misses his previous team… I also had to pause to consider where that 1st round pick would be.. Might as well be called a second round pick the way things are going in Vancouver.

Kuzmenko was clearly never going to understand what Tocchet wanted out of him. Most of his success came under Boudreau, whose coaching style was much different. Yes, he kept scoring under Tocchet last season, but that was before the new system truly got locked in place. A change of coaches will probably be good for him. And on a team with less scoring depth, he might find himself having fun again. Meanwhile Lindholm will be surrounded by superior talent and as mentioned early in the video, he tends to thrive with a good crew around him. Good for Pius Suter as well, because now he can steadily help drive that 3rd line with Garland and Joshua. Tocchet has been trying to roll four lines and this will really help. Glad they didn't give up Hoglander as well, because I don't think he has peaked yet.

1:53 Exactly. He's probably going to have fun in Calgary and forget all about that no-trade list. Heck, he might even want to say, if he's thriving. As a Canucks fan, obviously I want the Canucks to win this trade, but if the trade means a stronger top six and more success, fine. My biggest worry is that Hunter DOESN'T top out as a career AHLer.. lol.

2:26 Red Wings have a bit of a history of great drafting though.

I say we let this trade play itself out for a while before judging. There are a lot of moving parts involved.

To hell with the trade deadline, right Patrik? It's go time. lol (great video btw)

  12. Jim “trade a 1st rounder” rutherford lol…canucks should not be a go all in team right now…they literally just turned a corner after being irrelevent for 10 year…they should build up first

  13. I think a lot of people look at the return and think the Canucks overpaid, but this is a lot of quality over quantity. Brzustewicz is the main piece, but after that, it's a late first, Jurmo who, with all due respect, is a bust, and a conditional 4th. Paying that for Lindholm and to dump the last year of Kuzmenko's deal is a bargain.

  14. Treliving would have done everything in his power to resign Lindholm. In only his first year, Conroy has already proven to be a better GM than Tree.

  15. Kuz is going to light it up in CGY, and of course, too many assets given up, but I suspect there was no choice.. everybody knows the situation in vancouver, he's not fitting in, so not being played + cap hit over next year and pressure to resign EP40 = forced hand.

  16. I was surprised how much Vancouver gave up for Lindholm but you’re right that if Lindholm helps them this year and better yet if they can resign him then it’s a win for them as well, even giving up what they did.

  17. As a nucks fan not loving that Hunter was a piece in this deal, but hey 30+ games with what I would expect is a very motivated Lindholm should be good to great. Conroy absolutely needed to come out of this deal looking like a win and I think he did. Good on both teams.

  18. As a Nucks fan, it’s a win/win. Kuzmenko and the assets were providing basically zero value to the Canucks current roster. So they basically trade no value for immediate value by filling their greatest need. That said, if they don’t resign Lindholm, the flames win it for sure.
