319 and n on the season which is just remarkable considering the roster turnover from last season the fact that they were expected to be in a transition year would they compete for this Stanley Cup playoffs would they be a wild card team there were so many questions coming

In at the break they have the fewest uh regulation losses they have a share of the most points in the NHL tied with the Vancouver Canucks at 71 and they also have a share of the best point percentage also with Vancouver at 724 they’ve played 49 games they’ve

Amassed 71 points so that’s good for 72.4% of all points available this season which is ridiculous A Plus 45 goal differential which is second again to the Vancouver Canucks they are what sixth in goals four and in terms of goals allowed they are also uh sixth 1734 128

Allowed which is uh very close to Second there’s Edmonton at 124 which is pretty crazy considering their start Pittsburgh 126 Vancouver Florida at 127 and the Boston at 128 uh 71 and2 over their last 10 they won two in a row heading into the break and we can’t stress enough how I don’t

Want to say improbable but how surprising this is for the Bruins look at all the guys they lost back in the off season two franchise centers retire and yet they’re still keeping it going now I did mention their underlying numbers is not super strong they’re 22nd in terms of shot attempt differential

47.96 so that means in all the games played look at all the shot attempts taken by both sides the Bruins have 48% when it comes to uh shot differential the Bruins also rank 22nd with a shot differential of 48.5 n which means they are regularly getting

Outshot at five on five when it comes to goal differential at five on five uh the story changes a bit they’re third in terms of gold differential at five on five and we know why that is a they have a third ranked shooting percentage F five on five

9.96 and they also have and and that’s pretty well it’s probably a bit higher than average the average in the NHL at the moment five on five is around Toronto Vegas Calgary 14 15 16 so that’s around 8.5 let’s say so Bruins with an above average shooting percentage

And well above average safe percentage at five on five as well 93.5 n so the Bruins you know typically you look at shot attempts shots expected goals which takes into account High danger chances scoring chances the Bruins expected goals at five on five they rank 16th so right in the middle of the

Pack expected goals at five on five 50.0 n% what’s helping them is the goal tending certainly and some good five on five scoring and of course also their special teams the Bruins are one of the top teams in terms of both power play and penalty kill

They’re top five on the power play their penalty kill is falling off to seventh it was in the top five if not the top three earlier this season so what does this all mean well the Bruins not necessarily controlling play but they’re scoring they’re getting those timely saves and they’re

A tremendous special teams team as well and those are the kinds of things you look at when it comes to playoff time will they be able to stop the puck will they be able to make those saves you have two legit starting goalies uh can they score right now they’re getting

Contributions all up and down the lineup and again I mentioned James Van reik before uh playing on a $1 million contract and he ranks fifth on the team in points at the moment posu running away with the team lead Brad Marshon Charlie Coyle each with uh over 40

Points you know challenging for almost a point per game makoy van rdik Pavo zaka Trent Frederick Jake debrusk Morgan geeki these are all guys who are chipping in Danton Heinen Matt ptra um although he has fallen off a little bit hitting perhaps a bit of a rookie wall but still you’re getting

Contributions up and down the lineup and that’s the kind of thing that breeds success for teams in the NHL look around there isn’t really a team that you can say this is a great team this is a dominant team this is 100% the team that is going to win the

Stanley Cup there there just isn’t that in the NHL at the moment the Bruins right up there most points best point percentage why not the Bruins this year again everybody will say look at what happened last year they flamed out in the playoffs uh this guy can’t do this Jim

They don’t have their first round pick this year no second round pick this year or next year uh they’re probably not going to be trading any of their top prospects in Fabian lysel Mason lorri Matt ptra although ptra could be a candidate to be sent back to Junior the Bruins will have

To decide around his 40th game whether or not they want to keep him up here put him on the fourth line have him watching from the Press Box practicing with the team or if they want him to be playing Major minutes for his Junior Team back here in gu

That’s going to be a real question for them to answer chances are he’s going to stick around uh but it’s still possible that he could be sent back because once you hit that 40 game Mark he will become a unrestricted free agent at 26 instead of age 27 it’s a problem for several

Years from now but it’s still a consideration in today’s NHL um they have these guys on nice deals like James Van reek Jake D brusk performing above his current deal and they’ll have to decide whether or not to resign him you know Kevin shaton Kirk’s around the one big possibility is

Whether or not they decide to flip either Derek forbort they could kind of be sellers and buyers at the same time right they have forbort and Matt grizzli at as pending unrestricted free agents on the blue line and they risk losing both of those guys for nothing on the

Open market same with Kevin shattenkirk they’ve seen how Mason Luray can contribute they’ve seen how Parker Witherspoon can contribute do they take the risk and deal one of those guys to recoup some picks or do they stamp hat in order to mitigate the risk of injury that is

More than likely going to come up at some point um they’ll probably keep those guys but again they do risk losing all their unrestricted fre agents like van RSD D heyen grizzli forbort shaton Kirk um in a typical year those are guys that could be floated on the trade

Market if you don’t think you’re going to be able to assign them but right now they’re seen as like internal rentals and you might as well hold on to them and see if they can help you get over the hump in the playoffs so trade deadline coming up a
