Oilers fan here (coming in peace), just looking for help finding a very specific Gretzky Rangers clip.
I feel it really exemplifies Gretzky’s genius, but it’s hard to find because it didn’t actually result in a goal. Maybe someone here remembers it though and remembers where they saw it.
**Description:** Gretzky gets a loose puck and skates through the neutral zone as fast as he can with a near breakaway (the crowd starts to get excited), but the opposing defensemen manages to keep up with him, so he slows down and turns back in the neutral (and you can hear the crowd deflate), only for Gretzky to make a cross ice no look pass to a Ranger player coming off the bench who then has a free path to the net for a breakaway (and who doesn’t score).
To the best of my recollection the clip was at MSG (home game), it was just a cool clip to me because it showed that even if he didn’t have the speed in his old age he was still able to use his hockey IQ to make great plays.
PS: I cheered for Gretzky and Kurri wherever they went – so was most definitely on the Rangers bandwagon for those 96 and 97 playoff runs.
In the meantime if you love Gretzky, this is an amazing supercut of his time in NY that I found: https://youtu.be/KaqLkVhz91s
