NHL Goalies Don’t Make Sense Anymore

Goalies are always unpredictable, but this season seems to take it to the extreme. So many amazing and unexpected stories. In this video, I’m analyzing the surprising trends in NHL goaltending during the 2024 season. From unexpected performances to startling stats, we cover it all. The 2024 NHL season showcases the volatility and unpredictability of goaltending. From veterans finding new life to rising stars making their mark, this season is one for the books. After all, Marc-Andre Fleury of the Minnesota Wild just moved into second all-time in career wins – so a goalie video was due!

In this video:

Igor Shesterkin: Despite being a previous Vezina Trophy winner, Shesterkin’s performance with the New York Rangers has seen a notable dip.

Ilya Sorokin: Following a massive contract extension, Sorokin’s numbers with the New York Islanders have unexpectedly dropped.

Martin Jones: Experiencing another career revival, Jones is making a big and totally unexpected difference with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Joey Daccord : From the AHL to NHL spotlight, Daccord’s success with the Seattle Kraken is a highlight of the season.

Cam Talbot: Talbot is having a resurgent season, providing much needed reliability for the Los Angeles Kings.

Connor Hellebuyck: Leading the Winnipeg Jets, Hellebuyck maintains top-tier performance, proving his worth as a Vezina Trophy contender.

  1. I havent finished vid yet but to boost ur engagement ill comment that halak was my fav goalie of all time so he always bias GOAT

  2. I've seen much more stick handling around the net, and guys shooting lower than usual. One timers are coming from in closer with passes across the royal road right in front of the net.

All this culminates to make big structured goalies better than athletic goalies this year. I don't think its permanent, but will stay put for the rest of the year.

  3. I'd argue Jeremy Swayman is also definitely in the vezina conversation, and Ullmark is right behind him, Boston has an incredible goaltender duo.

  4. Really enjoyed the longer video! Martin Jones is such an interesting story. And nice to see Daccord getting credit for not only this season but his incredible run last post season for the firebirds! Great video.

  5. Shesty’s problem with consistency most probably comes from his injury early in the season, and hopefully he can regain his rhythm. NYR defense was better when the team lacked stars (Shesterkin and Fox), which likely came from a psychological effect, so what they need now is to regain that grit and mentality.

  6. Goaltending is as good as the defensive structure in front of the goalie. Allowing offensive zone cross ice passing and other high chance opportunities will result in more goal going. Shots on goal is a stupid stat to refer to. It is the number of grade A opportunities given up that matter. Star players out side the crease struggle at times every year. this happens to goalies as well. Play better defensively as a team and goals against go down. Save percentage does not mean much if your team is not good and give up a lot of grade A chances.

  7. I would argue Connor Ingram he might not be winning the same amount of games as goalies like hellebuyck but in 27 games 15 wins 5 of them shutouts in what I consider his second actual season in the league also with a respectable 918% in my opinion he could end up helping the coyotes getting a wildcard playoff spot this season if he just tightens up the net a little more and the other players start putting up a few more points

  8. Helly is like the little brother that listens to the big kids so he can join in. Hey kid stay in the net if the puck goes left you go left and if right you go right, just stay in front of the puck. Ok, so I can play with you guys?

  9. Please quit saying that "No one expected the Jets to be where they…" true hockey fans with high hockey IQ have known that the Jets have been elite for several years but I'm glad people are FINALLY taking notice. Go Jets Go

  10. Igor's problem has to be mental. To me it looks like he just hasn't been the same since his injury from a while back. To make matters worse, our defense hasn't really shown up to any game in 2024 so far, so nobody's backing Igor up.

  11. The players are just simply getting better. The league wants more goals to be scored and when that happens the media goes into shock and start saying the goalies in the NHL are showing minor regressions.

  12. i’m surprised hellebuyck is that good and can see pucks that well with that massive sniffer in the way

  13. Bro gotta say… This is the best hockey video I’ve seen in a while. I’m just so impressed. Ima keep typing for a bit to get some more of that sweet viewer retention in. Keep it up man.

  14. Also samsanov's vacation to the AHL seems to have fixed whatever his problem was, posting a couple or low goal wins since he came back

  15. Cam Talbot since January 1st: 0-6-2 in 8 games with a goals against average of 4.27 and a save percentage of .873. My bad for the shoutout, Cam!

  16. The thing to think about also is you can have an amazing goalie but lack defense and they’ll let a lot of goals in or you can have great defense and a bad goalie and they will still let a lot of goals in and look bad both ways.

  17. Don’t mean anything till it’s playoffs. How your goalie plays in the playoffs matters most. The best goalies are at their best in the playoffs

  18. Definitely not the video I thought I'd be watching …. maybe instead of who playing well you should be talking about how they play …. how boring goaltending has become . How predictable it is today … how ROBOTIC the position is …

  19. 1. Game is constantly changing and elite players adapt to goalies as well, if you look up shooting patterns you will see big changes especialy compared to the last session
    2. some are good against these new strategies others, not so much and some can adapt quite quickly.

  20. Dude, I'm 44 and played goal for 25 years (I don't play much anymore, I need to save my knees and hips) but we've never made sense! lol…. Dude, you'd have to be crazy or unusual to take rubber like this and enjoy it, haha…..

  21. Great video, I wasn't ready for it to end (partly because I was waiting to hear Demko's name 😉 )

  22. You forgot to mention my boy stewie skinner up in Edmonton, he's suddenly turned his playing up another level and has been a huge part of the oilers latest success

  23. Bigger net+ smaller pads = more goalsm. It's almost like those rule changes were intentional or something

  24. Saros is also having a terrible season. Last year could be argued that he was the best goalie in the league Goals saved above expected was 46.7 highest in the league. This year it's -6 and he's been really inconsistent.

  25. How many times are you going to be surprised? You are analyzing random chaos and trying to find analytical patterns that are simply not there. The NHL has made rules that deliberately add random outcomes to keep the weaker teams in the game. That’s why goaltenders are good one day and suck the next. And they are only as good as their team D, the refs and pure luck let them be. It’s also why so many top teams go out in the first round of the playoffs and unlike every other pro sport, one of the top three teams don’t win the championship on a regular basis. Since the 08 rule changes the league is a statistical crapshoot. Last place to first place doesn’t require a 5 year rebuild anymore – like the Blues when they won the cup and the Oilers this year – you can go from last to first in 40 games. The integrity of the outcome was deliberately compromised to keep the losers happy and hopeful. It’s false parity.

  26. I'm old enough to remember league avg sv% of like .865. That's before crazy tall thigh rise and synthetic materials. They need to go to 10" or 9" wide pads and drop the thigh rise to like 2".
