I can see why he rejected it. To me, Jake Guentzel is a better player than Willian Nylander and if Nylander is making almost 12 mil per year, than 8.5 is a slap in the face for Guentzel. He's in his prime at 29 years old, and he's a 90 point player. He should be making at least 10 mil per year if not more.

one thing about the salary cap, no one team can hoard a bunch of high end players and succeed. TML for example.
The management of the Penguins are just dumb.. they're a team on the decline and even when they signed Karlsson, i knew it was a mistake because he wasn't gonna put you over the top top even get past the first round , let alone make the playoffs.. the management has put this team in a world wind and they're lost in 'no man's land'..
The management is doing the SAME thing Ken Holland did for the Red Wings when they declining.. signing and overpaying for aging players that won't put you over the top.. Jake isn't signing back with them because he sees it too.. we sees there's no hope for this team in the near future and wants out.. PERIODTTT..
I could see him asking for more then his playing shows cause look at Toronto they sing guys way more then they should other players see that and be like I want more then I should get even tho they don't do nothing in the playoffs

I see a Josh Norris for Jake Guentzel trade brewing. The Pens badly need a top line centerman going forward, and the Sens could definitely use a Guentzel in their top 6 pairing him with Stutzle.
He value is in the playoffs, look at his numbers. If you can get a first round pick, do it.
