  1. Hughes and Makar are different types of defensemen too.
QH is like some gravitational anchor on ice. Teammates repositions constantly around him, thus forcing the opposition to adjust, thus creating gaps, blown coverages, etc. He knows when to cycle back, back passes, when to shoot, etc… he's like a strategic wizard.
Makar on the other hand is a beast. He can literally do it all, end-to-end rushes, snipe in goals, seeing eye passes…. his ability to be unpredictable at time is his strength.

Quinn is more subtle, Cale is flashier….

  2. Hughes ability to dictate the flow and offensive pressure when ever hes on the ice is unreal

  3. Is Hughes more valuable to his team than Miro is to Dallas? Miro isn’t going to win the Norris, but go back and watch tapes of him defending McDavid. All Hail Makar, and rightfully so but Miro needs a mention.

  4. I watch Hughes more than I do Makar, but I will say that you never see Hughes making a mistake. Like Bruce said, he always makes the smart pass. Also, I don't know if I've ever seen a d-man keep the puck in the zone better than Hughes. He's full value.

  5. Quinn is elevating the team around him in a way that can only be compared to Mackinnon when it comes to the Colorado Avalanche. His advanced metrics for possession and point shares are also definitively better than Cale's advanced metrics right now. At the moment, it's Quinn's Norris trophy to lose and he's still a dark horse for the Hart if he can somehow play even better down the stretch.

  6. Bias aside, you've got to give it to Hughes this year. He is one of the youngest Captains in the league, (maybe youngest?), leading the defencemen in points, and has a commanding +/- this year. Canucks have been a horrible team for years before this, and he is one of the reasons this team has turned the tide. Sure, give credit to Tocchet and the new acquisition of Hronek, but you can't deny the fact what Hughes is doing is pretty incredible. Makar has been the better defenceman in years past, but this year, his performance is slightly behind Hughes
