How The Canucks ALMOST Signed GUSTAV NYQUIST But Couldn’t Due To Cap Space (Canucks Free Agency)

The Vancouver Canucks free agency selection yesterday was pretty active, as the Canucks ended up with Tyler Myers, Jordie Benn, and Oscar Fantenberg. However, it turns out the team was super close to signing one more free agent, eventual Columbus Blue Jackets top 6 forward Gustav Nyquist.

  1. Is it possible that one club would take Loui on 3 million cap and canucks will have to pay 3 million. That would be better then to send him to utica and continue paying 6 ?

  2. The Canucks are in a bad spot cap wise. Petterson, Hughes is due in 2 years. Add another contract in for nyquist and your at the cap limit without making the playoffs. You don’t build cup contenders by signing free agents. That’s how your in this predicament now. Haven’t made the playoffs in 5of 6 years. Build through the draft and fill in the edges with free agents. Look at how Colorado build their team. It’s not by big free agent signings, it’s by being smart with the cap. Vancouver is gonna be a bottom feeder while the avalanche raises cups because Vancouver can’t manage their finances.

  3. I'm sure benning was looking to move guys like Erikson and Sutter and spooner off but there probably were no takers. The Canucks probably knew as soon as the loungo cap thing happened that they could only sign one of Nyquist or Myers

  4. Just happily got rid of Nyquist here in S.J. It was some kind'a nice news when we got him but after seeing how he played, I was actually wondering how he could be top or top-2 pointer in Detroit…
Maybe he didn't get enough time to gel but I found myself disappointed and started hating on him in the playoffs…
He reminded me of the skinny little guy from Ice hockey on Nintendo you know… fast and agile but no physicality in his game. You didn't miss out on much to my point of view.

  5. Not buying it. The Canucks have to make moves this off season, but they can exceed the cap by 10% until the year starts. They've got months to work out their moves yet.

  6. I'm ok with our top 2 lines.Im really really ok with the 3rd and 4th lines.Who ever gets to play with brock and petey with have a monster year, maybe Goldy or leivo. Also with defence getting better expecting a huge upswing in point totals all across the board meaning teams will be calling about our players.

  7. The only player in Colombus that is close to Petey is Dubois. They have a hot young d pair, but other than that they are not even close. Officially rebuilding as of now.

  8. I kind of feel the CBA should allow a little more flexibility for dealing with awful contracts. Every team has one or two of them, and they stay shackled around the ankles of the franchise for years. It would be great if each team could buy out one contract each offseason and not be penalized against the Cap. So the Canucks should be able to cut Loui a cheque for 6 Mill each of the next 3 years while he tries to find work on the open market, same with Lucic in Edm etc. This would benefit the Players Union (the players still get paid) and the Owners (should they choose to they can get out from under bad contracts). I just hate seeing deals like the Subban for second rounders etc because the contracts are as important as the player's performance now.

  9. Nobody want Erickson's or Sutters contracts. In order to trade them you would also have to give up picks or prospects. Leafs had to dump a first in order to trade Marleau who only had 1 year left. They set the trend. What would it take to dump Erickson? Well, start with a first rounder. How do you feel about it now?

  10. Because Columbus is closer to winning the cup… And you want to have some loose change laying around in case a really great opportunity comes along like for example Connor from Winnipeg… The Canucks are only a trade away from having enough to afford him and that would be a major Improvement !***

  11. The next offer sheet could be for Connor from Winnipeg who is one of the best goal scorers in the league so you never know when Opportunity Knocks and why not the Canucks ! *

  12. Bruh we could have just got NyQuist and not Miller cuz there both taking 5.5 million and we gave up a first.😤😤😤

  13. Dude you seriously have no credentials to talk ANYTHING hockey … second, take Nyquist. We got rid of him here in Detroit for a reason… he’s scared. He’s weak. He turns pucks over when he sees he’s about to get rocked. Lmao

  14. You aren't wrong, BUT… we also can't assume that Benning has not been trying to move certain parts. Who is lined up waiting to take albatross contracts off our hands? It's not as easy as we think it is to find deals. On the other hand, we can hope that a rising tide floats all boats. Maybe Sutter comes back with a vengeance and kills it on a shut down line (with all the media dirt with LE this summer, I am dubious as to whether he will stick with the team, maybe he gets sent down, maybe he is professional about it and does what he can on the team, has a semi-bounceback year). Maybe Levio and Goldy, JV take another step and turn into steadfast middle 6ers? Come TDL next season, maybe players look a little more polished and we recoup picks by moving spare parts? As long as we move forward responsibly and not rush the rebuild by shifting into sell all for the win now mode, I think we are doing okay.

  15. It is nice to see Vancouver as being a place people WANT to come and play for a change, this is a good sign of times a changing.

  16. How could we move either sutter or Ericsson without retaining the salary to prevent the Nyquist signing?
