Arena Drama Thread

Hi /r/Coyotes,

In the last few days there have been an insane number of arena-drama related posts without much concrete news. Going forward, in an effort to keep arena conversation to one place (and for the sake of the fans that come to this sub for hockey and not off-ice drama), please utilize this thread for all speculative Arena-Relocation-Drama discussion. In the event of Concrete non-speculative news, feel free to post to the main sub. We will also try and keep the header updated.

Thank you!

**Confirmed Updates Below (confirmed if verified by numerous sources):**

**2/8/2024 10:49 Am – [Wyshynski]** [Can confirm and will add that the original 200 acre plan would have left the Coyotes on the hook for more infrastructure costs than they envisioned for the arena project.](https://twitter.com/wyshynski/status/1755649977680908539)

**2/8/24 10:44 AM – [Morgan]** [Also hearing that they will discuss the new deal in executive session today.](https://x.com/CraigSMorgan/status/1755648799077528061?s=20) (in reference to Rodier comment)

**2/8/24 10:25 AM – [Rodier]** [The Coyotes applied for the land auction several months ago. They wanted 200 acres. The appraisal came in too high for Yotes bank account. They cut application in half, to 100 acres. Land Department has to redo review. Now what does the NHL do? Me thinks they have to wait this one out. Meruelo holds the better hand right now. Unless there is some kind of written commitment Meruelo has made, there is nothing in NHL Constitution or by laws or standard Consent Agreement that requires an arena to be of a certain size. Mullet conforms with CBA requirements. Team is cash flow positive at Mullet last year.](https://twitter.com/NhLplayer123/status/1755643946984698181) (credit to /u/AltaVistaYourInquiry for original comment)

Pretty sure the only actual news that has come out in the last day was the fact that the Coyotes werent on the docket this morning for the land that they were interested, and that the next time that committee meets isnt until mid-March.

[Rodier has an interesting angle I haven’t seen anywhere else yet:](https://twitter.com/NhLplayer123/status/1755643946984698181)

Is it just me or did this arena drama and NHLPA speaking out coincide very closely with the ongoing 2018 Hockey Canada World Juniors scandal coming out of London, ON? Knowing that the scandal isn’t necessarily “new” news, I could see both the NHLPA and NHL publicity people pointing at the coyotes and the arena situation to take eyes away from the scandal. And people have bought in with the scathing articles and Friedman (NHL Insider) comments. Not saying Friedman is in on it, but it seems like things were hunky dory until the charges were alleged and names were dropped and then he is getting dramatized quips from every exec in the NHL and NHLPA about our situation.

  4. Just want to throw this out there, Desert Diamond Arena BROKE GROUND April 2002 and was ready for Hockey Play December 2003.

That would be 1.5 seasons in Tempe. Still doable

Fuck, man. I’m moving to Phoenix from the Northeast and was really looking forward to finally having a team to root for. Always liked hockey but I’m 4 hours from the nearest team so I’ve never been to a game. Hope this organization can avoid relocation.

My move came about suddenly so I never knew much about the organization until now. Been doing some catching up, and you guys have been through some shit. As a Bills fan who endured mismanagement and relocation rumors for decades, I know a franchise can turn things around with the right leadership. Don’t lose hope.

  7. Here is a good read from someone who is a true, impartial NHL insider. He doesn’t see a reason to panic yet.

” SLC is a backup, not THE backup. My understanding is the NHL prefers to expand to Utah, not relocate a franchise there. Could the NHL pursue other ownership groups for the Coyotes? Yes, and I believe there are interested parties – ones that would keep the team in market. “
