When I was looking at the Flyers stats, I noticed Tippett had a good number of hits despite really low penalty minutes. He currently has a ratio of 20 hits per penalty minute, and Risto is a distant second on the team at 8.33. It made me wonder how good Tippett was at clean hits league-wide so I downloaded the hockey-reference dataset and crunched the numbers. Among players who’ve played a decent number of games (above 20) this season and have penalty minutes at all, Tippett is third in the league! He also has over triple the number of points as the number 1 and 2 cleanest hitters. Thought some other stats nerds here might find this interesting.
