Charlie Coyle on Bruins Shorthanded Goals in Win vs Canucks | Postgame Interview

Charlie Coyle on Bruins Shorthanded Goals in Win vs Canucks | Postgame Interview

Um it seemed like one of those games where where the effort of the sticks of the forwards at the blue lines it’s just a lot of second and third efforts to make sure that turnovers wouldn’t be turnovers and you know it just seemed like a total intensification of the way

You guys want to play is that right I agree there I mean that was definitely a uh component that we want to get better at you know coming from last game just that sense of urgency the the first second third efforts like that’s what takes especially against uh uh great

Teams and they’re in their position for for a reason the way they play um so it’s always kind of a we’re we play as a unit right and something breaks down it’s that next guy and we have those layers but um the second third fourth efforts get the puck

Out and we get on transition or we just kind of stump them at the line um make them curl back and make them dump it in or that that plays in our favor and that’s something that that we talk about and um it’s something that just it should be

Second nature for us right just that’s that’s how you you should work and that’s how we should play what you think you and Brad have been so effective on the penalty kill together yeah I mean it’s it’s it’s always a work in progress and I our our penalty kill has been up

To par from where we started this year um so that that’s an area we wanted to get better at and um I mean you’re not looking for for the score on the on the PK when the time is right the opportunity present your itself like you

Yeah you’ll jump jump to those but um it just happened to work out that way because I think we’re playing the right way um we were we were together and that’s our defenseman too not just me and him and um everyone’s kind of tight we’re reading the play and if those

Opportunities present themselves then we’re in good position to to capitalize on that and it was great by marshy to stop there and and put a rebound home and and even Danton on that other one where he just breaks through he’s in the right spot in the middle we turn it over

And he Springs through and makes a great play you seem like such a team guy but are you like going to secretly check the stats for short-handed assist now no no I I I don’t really care for that that’s uh I think the only thing I know about

The short-handed stuff is Mary climbing the the history uh history books I think what is he ninth ninth now is that um that’s pretty impressive um so I followed that for for a long time when ever since Mar started and start putting up goals on the on the PK he’s a guy you

Got to watch out for but it always goes back to the basics doing doing it the right way and then those opportunities present themselves and take advantage of it anything extra just you know best in the East best in the west as far as points go going into this kind of

Wanting to make a statement against another really good team there definitely is that’s you want to get up for for each game and that only um uh that only you know get you more more engaged and get you more focused uh just to know where this team is at

They’re they’re top of the league um we’re right behind them and so it does mean a lot and and that’s you know you don’t play him too often so when you do play him you you want to make your presence known and play play well and

And play the way we know how and kind of set the tone that way and and we did that and that’s great we’ll see him in a little bit too but um it’s it’s not hard to get up for those games against teams like that when you score a goal like

That so quickly it’s obviously a lift of your bench but can you feel them being deflated a little bit they’re on the power play yeah it can be on the like when you let up a short and a goal it’s it’s a damper especially right

Away um but in our in our minds it it’s great way to start we still get a kill penalty after that and and they’re a good team so it’s you got to kind of come back down Earth and and stay even kill in that situation you still got to

Kill off a penalty um but yeah you play the right way you do the right things you get rewarded sometimes and that’s huge for the PK right there to to to dampen them and I mean we see it last game I I get a kind of short handed

Break and I don’t score they come back they score so it’s so quick how things can uh can change like that so uh it’s great to capitalize that way last guys go four nothing but there’s still two perod left to play against a really explosive opponent what’s the mindset

There because they really didn’t get much of a for the rest of the way no well that’s um I think that’s something we’ve gotten better at at this year has progressed is having the lead going into the third and and either uh you know we

Stay on the attack either we um we keep scoring we do it the right way we play the right way but we we limit their chances too that’s the biggest part I think we’ve done a a really great job of that and and playing the right way and

Those teams when you’re down four nothing they’re going to start playing risky and getting away from their game and as long as we do the right things it’s going to play into ours and we’ll get more opportunities so it’s it’s not trying to do everything out of the

Ordinary played a great two periods so we just wanted to keep keep on that keep harping on that playing the right way and you see when we do that we get a great result

BOSTON — Charlie Coyle commented on the Bruins’ success with two short-handed goals, saying, “Our penalty kill hasn’t been up to par from where we started this year, so that’s an area we want to get better. You’re not looking to score on the PK..but it just happened to work out that way because I think we’re playing the right way.”
