As much as I like what Nylander brings to the Leafs, I’m not that crazy about the term, but am even more concerned about the per-season cap hit (with my belief that that last aspect should’ve been not substantially more than US$8 million).
Right so how does the Maple Leafs fix their blue line now since they gave Nylander that type of money
The Leafs are a regular season juggernaut but not a Stanley cup contender. I expect them to get knocked out in round one again, especially if they face Florida or Boston.

11.5 for a guy who doesn't play in his own end. This contract is brutal. They should have let him walk. Imagine how little effort 30+ year old Nylander will be putting in with this contract signed and filed.
There is no comparison with sports with no cap. Get rid of the cap and I will celebrate every contract.
Has the roster worked? No.
Marner contract? Why would Marner take a penny less? Neither Matthews are Nylander did?
Who are you signing with that 11.5? How about a defensively responsible forward who won't be giving up the brutal goals that Nylander does with his lazy backchecks and unwillingness to to play in the Leafs end? How about some big hard to play against Dmen? If we don't care about defending, sign both Domi and Bertuzzi long term with 3 million left over something else.
Leafs without Matthews 35-19-2. Leafs without Marner, 12-13-4. Do you want a player who wins individual awards or a player who gets your team into the playoffs?
Playoffs? Who leads the Leafs in playoff points? Who has been sheltered and who plays top competition? And how about last year? Nylander was the Leafs worst forward against the Lightning. Nylander's playoff reputation is kabuki theater.
Marner isn't in a tough spot because he is last. He was last, last time. How did that go? The Leafs are in a tough spot because they are a lottery team when Marner isn't in the lineup.
You think Nylander will preform? Last time he signed he followed it up by going 0.5 ppg. And this time he has no reason to do better the next year.

I will say this about the Leafs going far in the playoffs for one it has nothing to do with the core 4 it has everything to do with the goalie mark my words Joseph woll will take us all the way to the finals if he stays heathy 100% so I wish everyone can just be quiet about the core 4 and just wait and see what I mean we need a goalie to stand on his head point blank
$6.1M increase for 2 players next year. The cap is going up only $4.5M so the team has $1.6M less to pay the rest of the team. Will this team be better?
May 2023-These guys (along with everyone else) said last May that someone has to be traded because there’s too much money tied up in 4 guys or someone has to take a team friendly deal to help them free up the cap at the very least if they wanna stick around.
July 2023-Matthews signs for 13.25 million. Jan 2025-Nylander signs for 11.5 million with both having NMC and they celebrate it because it had to be done.
May 2024-after another first round exit these guys say that there’s too much money tied up in 4 guys and Marner will have to take a team friendly deal for them to compete.
July 2024-Marner signs for 12.75 million with NMC and they celebrate it because it had to be done. Rinse and repeat.
So many leaf fans mad and upset some are just never happy with anything done. I love Willy signed and is staying the cap will work it self out.everyone can chill about Mitch and JT still have 1.5 year away. Mike and Dave remember we have 3 players on LTIR this year that will be completely off our books, that will basically cover year one than the cap goes up.
You pay for great players. Taveres may be his last contract unless he is willing to take a huge discount. Marner will be signed and 25/26 money for the four will be the same as this year. Be patient you have a good team better than our lousy Canadiens who are going nowhere again
Its all gotten out of hand. Its all about money now, pissing contest between narcisstic mega stars. Fans who probably just make enough to get by , throwing dollar amounts around like its nothing. The NMC makes this an anchor for the team going forward. You never give the max Term, max Money, and NMC to a player. That is GM suicide. Can't help but think the team will suffer from this in the near to long future.

Dave is right id honestly rather see willy on the team than marner.
For me, maybe marner does have a higher ceiling of play, but nylander's average games are a lot better and more consistent than marner.
Alot of people say its not about your a game , its more about how good your b game is. Marner goes COMPLETELY invisible sometimes. Nylander at least shows game in and game out his game doesnt vary that much.
I could very well see 12.5 from marner. It goves him 1 mil more than nylandser but it also goves him the same 1.6 mil raise that matthews got.
Matthews going from 11.6 to 13.2 is around 1.6 if marner goes from 10.9 to 12.5 its the same 1.6.
This is the silver lining of having matthews and marner already near the maximum players means the raises they get are manageable.
I know this cap structure seems similar, but it's different. This time around, matthews is the bar for all of the contracts where last time tavares was the bar.
Brodies comes off the books and knies has taken larfe steps this year. I think the leafs thought they could get domi and bertuzzi and let knoe develop slowly starting at the 3rd line. He rocketed to the first line and hasnt looked back. I think that makes domi or bertuzzi expendable .
Can we drop both bertuzzi and brodie? Give domi 3.5 for 3 or 4 years? If brodie and bertuzzi go it frees up around 10 mil even with domi at 3.5.
Even with matthews and nylander eating the raise it still gives them around 7.5- 8 mill for a d man to pair with reilly.
I for one feel there are plenty of moves that can happen to change the way the team looks. Even during this next year where they are strapped.

I think it is pretty clear Leafs have decided they want to keep Nylander over Marner otherwise they would not have committed to 8 years. A big name can really only be traded in the off season. Another bad playoff cements Marners fate. Lots of teams would be interested in a sign and trade. Marner is a good player but cracks under pressure. He would be fine if we had some toughness to protect the big guns from cheap shots. That is still a problem.
I think 8 years for Willy is stupid. There’s no way to tell he’ll play this well even next year.. let alone 5 years down the road leading to 8 years.
Marners gotten a point or two away from 100 points almost every season.
Plus Willy has more games played in the nhl than Marner.. Marners got 100 more points lol
