Elliotte Friedman on the Rielly/Greig incident, Tanev, Markstrom and more
Hockey Night in Canada Insider Elliotte Friedman joined the guys and shared his thoughts on the Rielly/Greig incident and what he expects the suspension to be and the latest with Chris Tanev and Jacob Markstrom.
The problem comparing cross checks is he had time to decide what to do and couldn't control his anger…and used his stick on someone not expecting it. Was defenseless. Kinda cowardly. If you want to make a "statement" drop the gloves and wait for a willing combatant.
What is the difference between a tap in and then celebrating an empty net. Or doing the "Griddy" whatever that means if you score on a penalty shot in OT? Hockey karma comes soon enough
Never thought I'd have the mental image of Quinn Hughes doing the gritty in my mind. Haha. I think cellies are for fun, some speak more to me than others, but none deserve an attack. As for Rielly… I see a 6-game suspension as most likely. A response would be good, but a cross check to the head is too dangerous to not make an example of. Everyone is talking about it right now for a reason.
These Toronto media talking heads are fucking closing rank around the source of their paycheck – the Leafs organization. Fuck them all, and Bieksa is becoming one of them too.
'People loose their minds' Elliot because that is learned behavior ftom watching the NHL. This type of play does not belong in any sport. Much less a sport that has five black-eyes at the moment!
I play div-league hockey and I can honestly tell you that Walman’s ‘white man’ dance hits a nerve at any level. We had a guy score the winning goal on us during a tied playoff game and instead of doing some stupid Peewee act he skated by our bench and grabbed his jock. No one on our bench said a word but a number was taken and in the very next game first puck drop he had to answer for his action. Needless to say the score was settled and that was it. My team ended up winning the series 3 games to 1. His ‘skate by’ in that first game was the turning point and we refused to be beat! Doesn’t matter what level you play, Hockey Code is Hockey Code.
The dance is just looking like an idiot, but you slapshot in an empty net is a middle finger and the most disrespectful move you can make. Good job Riley, his reaction should have a positive ripple effect through the team, that's what it's all about when someone spits on your city's.
The incident is what it is. Rielly will probably get the six game holiday. Now it is up to Canada's Team to tighten up, reach down and win the six games. Simple as that.
No team and fan base deserved it more. I remember Leafs nation last year saying "doors wide open", acting like they had already won the cup before facing Panthers in the 2nd round. How is that dismissal not totally disrespectful? Leafs fans are the most arrogant, disrespectful and delusional in the league. Looks good on them
Hey, Frydman, you look terrible. A little hungover are you. Let this crap go. Sickening rhetoric. If that's the case, the attacker can make it look like he's making a glancing blow but really aiming at his head. Everybody needs to grow up. You're making the greatest game on ice look like a pansy patch circus. The guy slapped the puck. Who gives a shit!! Drama queens. You all remind me of that fool Turd'oh. Wah, wah, wah…
If this was the early 90s, I'd say Greig maybe should have eased up with the slapper. When I started watching hockey, the Code was definitely in effect and if you broke it, you answered to someone. But with the enforcers basically extinct in 2024 and all these rats running around, for me, a guy taking a slap shot and making sure he got in in the empty net is a very minor offence and hardly disrespectful in comparison to some of the other shenanigans going on in the NHL these days. In any case, Rielly overreacted. Obviously, losing sucks and if you're not upset after a loss, something is wrong. But losing it on someone over a slap shot into an empty net, while understandable, is still way over the top and unacceptable. He could have skated up to Greig and had a strong word with him and that would have been more than an adequate response. But this isn't 1992 and Greig isn't Al MacInnis or Iafrate. The NHL needed to send a message here and they did that. I usually don't take the league's side on a lot of these issues, but they made the right call.
Hilarious watching the SN panel (except Hrudey) & Toronto media advocating so embarrassingly hard for Reilly. My gosh if this play was the other way around they would be advocating for a suspension as long as Hunter’s.
Rides up? There is a "ride-up" because Greig tried to avoid the hit. There's a split second when a player "shrugs" to avoid an impending decapitation. The attempt to injure Greig was deliberate and should not be lauded as "standing up for your team". That's a chicken s#*t move. Don't bushwhack a dumbass Ottawa player and claim you're a high and mighty Toronto team. Rielly should not be treated as a hero.
I hate the leafs but hockey players and hockey fans know there are unwritten rules you don’t break. Slapping the puck into the empty net is against those rules. Morgan did the right thing. As for Walman, that only makes Walman look like a goof.
Take the fact that a majority of western Canada hates Toronto and put that bias out of the picture. It was a cocky thing , a young person does. It was disrespectful to the Leafs, and the game. Morgan seems to have pulled a Dr D David Shultz here, unfortunately, and i thought of Hunter. No room for the play or the reaction in the game.
Dale Hunter got 21 games for the same thing Rielly did. The league will likely only give Rielly 5 games because he's not a repeat offender like Hunter.
5:00 As a Canucks fan I say bulls**t. I would NOT lose my mind over that. Give me a break. If the Canucks didn't want an empty netter scored on them with a slapshot, don't be losing a game and pull your goalie giving the other team a chance to do that. Friedman is just wrong, and anyone who is losing it because of that really needs to get a grip. There are more important things to be concerned about in life.

He definitely went for the head what the hell are you watching

Back in the day wouldnt have even been a penalty.
Hunter Turgeon Elliotte. Ride up , give me a break. He tried to take his head off. Very dangerous act max suspension.
1 game max

Rielly is schmuck. Don’t let the clown ever live this down.
As a newer viewer to this podcast, the clip should have started 1 minute later
Goof move both ways. Hit Shoulder first. Karma, 5 game suspension for the crybabies.
These Toronto media talking heads are fucking closing rank around the source of their paycheck – the Leafs organization. Fuck them all, and Bieksa is becoming one of them too.
Intentional head shot, lack of discipline, this could be a turning point in the leafs season… they are just hanging on to a wild card spot..
I don’t think Canucks fans would be as “oh it wasn’t a big deal” as Elliott’s thinks. I still remember Steve Moore, and where this can go.
Reilly should have dropped the gloves…that would have been fine.
If Zadorov got 2 , Reilly should be looking at 10
Ridiculous amount of cowtailing by sportsnet presnters to SN and Leaf fans
The slap shot was not a big deal. Morgan's over reaction Rylee gets nailed to the wall with a max suspension
Elliot is wrong the empty net slap shot was nothing.
I don't think this Canucks roster isn't quite good enough to win the cup

Perron six game suspension is a good comparable. Reilly has a clean history, so a bit less is appropriate. Four or five games seems likely.
He should be barred for the rest of the year ,idiot !

Rielly great example for kids ,moron .
Remember kids don't win too hard, the ghost of Don Cherry will haunt you for 7 years
10% action, 90% reaction.

I hope every team does this to the leafs, until that flaccid core four retires. They wonder why every other fan despises them.

Intent to injure
He's going for the throat
Don you need to get a pair of glasses
This clown don he's in another world

The Canucks still only have four bonafide top six forwards. Hoog and Suter are both playing well, but that’s the only hole that needs filling.
I hate the Chicago goal song more
He's a complete leafs shill.
Shameful, but I guess it comes down to who pays his salary.
If anyone did it yes they would challenge the player but they wouldn't be putting a stick to the guys head

Wallman vs Grieg are similar levels of disrespect. The Canucks ate their loss and got annoyed about it, Rielly tried to take someone's head off.

That was more emotion than I've seen from a Leaf in a long time, and it came after an empty net goal. That team has VERY little heart.
