This game will be tough, but not as tough as being an Ottawa Senator in [Scott Wheeler’s Prospect Pool](https://theathletic.com/5040065/2024/01/30/nhl-prospect-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article) countdown. Still no sniff of Detroit :). List continues in two tiers for now, with the Sens Shit Tier in the inline replies along with Wheeler’s criteria.

***Per Scott, this is a tier of teams that are more or less jumbled around League average. Unlike the Senators, who are just unfathomably worse.***

    #Tier: Rise and Fall
*Mostly ships passing in the night, heading in opposite directions up and down the standings. Or at least, that’s what’s starting to happen, but this description may change as the standings are revealed.*

    * **24. [Florida Panthers](https://theathletic.com/5214492/2024/02/07/panthers-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: Not a lot of top and talent here though, and Spencer Knight is back in the mix.

    * **23. [Vegas Golden Knights](https://theathletic.com/5214501/2024/02/08/golden-knights-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: No high end talent and missing RHD, but better than most recent champions. Had a bunch of maybes at goal, too.

    * **22. [New Jersey Devils](https://theathletic.com/5235251/2024/02/09/devils-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: Bunch of Meh, except that this still includes Nemec, so barring a miracle they’re really falling. Should be lower but c’est la vie. This is what happens when tons of elite talent makes the jump.

    * **21. [Dallas Stars](https://theathletic.com/5239029/2024/02/10/stars-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: Stankoven is near elite at the top. Borque a talented 2nd in line. Takes from there since Johnson made the jump, but a respectable pool for aSC contender.

    * **20. [Washington Capitals](https://theathletic.com/5242141/2024/02/11/capitals-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: Dangerous combo of mediocre NHL team and Pool. Everyone Loves Leonard, except apparently me. Mirorchsnrines ichneoichencko will play NHL minutes. Your guess is as good. As any after that. This team may be in for a painful rebuild.

    * **19. [New York Rangers](https://theathletic.com/5252641/2024/02/12/rangers-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: Strangely high number of LWs and youve got to go 7 deep before finding defense. But at the top, Gabe Perreault continues his quest to prove at least 20+ teams in the league were fools to not draft him.

    * **18. [Vancouver Canucks](https://theathletic.com/5247687/2024/02/13/canucks-nhl-prospect-pool-rankings-2024?source=user-shared-article)**: Decent strides and some top talent (Lekkerimaki and Willander). Overall pool that mostly moved up from last year bc of a good draft and good development. For me, its still weird to see Raty – at one brief point in early discussion for #1OA in his draft – mentioned as a tertiary NHL’r.

Anyone else feel like this is the first playoff game? I know we got 30 games left in the season but if we win these next two it feels like a lock

  3. Annual athletic wings player poll came out and for teammate you trust with the aux cord, tied for second was joe veleno and “not joe veleno”. Which I thought was hilarious

We might have a few tough games coming back from the break but we have one of the lowest strengths of schedule:

    3. Toronto
    4. Buffalo
    5. Washington
    6. Rangers
    7. New Jersey
    9. Pittsburgh
    11. Islanders
    17. Tampa Bay
    18. Detroit
    19. Philadelphia

  5. I had a thought this morning about seider and how his underlying numbers haven’t been that great this year. I haven’t really thought much of it because he’s been faced with the literal hardest matchups in the league for D, but the more I think about it, the more I questioned it.

When I watch seider, I consistently see him shutting guys down and breaking up plays. I could probably count on one hand the times he’s been cleanly beaten where it was his mistake that led to a chance so why do his numbers show other wise?

I’m wondering if it has to do with the way we play man to man coverage. Seider is almost exclusively glued to the best player on the ice, and he almost always completely shuts them down, most notably against a guy like mcdavid. But I’m wondering if because he’s not covering a zone where he can switch off to whoever is most dangerous at the moment in his zone, other guys are getting better looks because our team defence hasn’t been great through the season with how many weak defensive forwards we have?

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but the eye test on seider defensively doesn’t match the underlying numbers to me

Red Wings have split the season with the Oilers every year dating back to 2017-2018. If that holds, guess who’s winning this one?

That’s right, Andrew Copp’s Detroit Red Wings.

Today’s a relaxed day at the office so I’m wearing my Seider sweatshirt and sipping coffee as the emails come in. LFGRW

    gm folks

Wings can jump to 3rd in the Atlantic with either scenario:

    – Wings win
    – Toronto and Tampa both lose in any fashion

    Or

    – Wings lose in OT/SO
    – Toronto and Tampa both lose in regulation

Mmm hmm, oh yeah, that’s a game day.

It could also be my kid filling their pants under the dinner table.

Another day, another “trade targets” post on the main page. Mods, how many times do we need to have the same conversation.

Good morning Wings fam, I help coach my kids 10U team here in Western Mass. On Sunday, one of our players began experiencing severe headaches and eventually got sick on the bench. After the game, his parents realized something was still not right with him and took him to our local hospital where they discovered a brain aneurysm. He was immediately flown to Boston for emergency surgery. He is stable but still in a medically induced coma. If you are able and willing to donate, his gofundme is below and we thank you. If not, we just ask you keep a thought for Hunter. He is a great kid on and off the ice and the news has hit our team hard.

It’s a glorious feeling to wake up and see that the Wings are still in the playoffs, each game is meaningful, and we can scoreboard watch other teams.
