The Risks and Rewards of Vasili Podkolzin | Miroki

Vasili Podkolzin was a polarizing figure in the scouting community this year. His upside could pay huge dividends for the Canucks but he is not without risk. This is my attempt to break down those risks and suggest how Podkolzin can progress to become a game-breaking two-way talent in the NHL for years to come.

  1. Looks promising, might be a good addition to the roster however I am worried he might leave like Tryamkin.

  2. All young russians are like this in the begining (to much unsmart and selfish plays) . See where all the top russian players are now in the leauge 😃

  3. Good to see you back buddy. Awesome video with great analysis. I know you’re not a scout but you could certainly be one if you wanted to. Ive always felt your evaluation to be one of the clearest in terms of hockey youtubers!

I think you make a great point about skating being the root of his problems, that seems very likely. Another problem could be the systems he’s been brought up in, in other words, I believe better coaching could possibly change his approach as well.

  4. I think podkolzin could very much become a player like Tarasenko if he can keep a tunnel vision on cracking that roster and develop his game. They both are riskier Russian talents that went in the first round. Podkolzin has the skillset so I hope he pans out for y’all.

  5. Nice video and scouting report. I agree with you. The great intangible is the fact that he appears to have that drive and desire to succeed that all great players have. A couple of years in the KHL and he will learn a lot. Hope he decides to sign with Vancouver in a couple of years from now.

  6. Picking up Podkolzin at #10 was a great spot in terms of risk management! I also like how he is willing to play in any role depending on the team needs

  7. Wow, really happy I found this channel. Even though I’m a Hawks fan, the Canucks are my Canadian team and I’m glad I found a channel that’s majority Canucks.

  8. First time seeing your channel. Bo was knocked for his skating as well, I see some similarities in the way they skate and with a bit of training, like Bo it should improve. I don't usually get overly excited about a prospect but with Podz, like Petey and Quinn, I can't help it. We've all seen how good he was at the Hlinka last year and the wjc. This year at the 4 nations and the few mins he's getting in the KHL, he has been unfucking believable. Sure he hasn't got any points, tho in the 4 nations that was more on his teammates. In the K even tho he hardly plays, he has had an impact on every shift. The guys a relentless puck hound who reminds me of a winger version of Malkin. Maybe not points-wise, but just how strong on the puck he is, and how strong defensively he is.

  9. Great video! Im wondering if you could do a video on the potential return of tryamkin. What it would take for a return? Hows he doing?.. ie progress made in khl and how he would fit on the Canucks line up could be some starters maybe?

  10. Interesting analysis. Some really good points regarding his skating. I think his ceiling is very high though if he can improve on that part of his game. There were skating concerns about Bo and Boeser after their draft years as well. Also can’t under estimate this kids will and compete level that goes along way.

  11. I thought the biggest reason he fell was because he is at least 2 years out from coming to North America. Is this true? Can he fix his skating technique and vision? Do you think he will be a top6 winger in the NHL in 3 years? What is his maximum potential/upside?

  12. I wish I could tell you more about his career in Russia, since I live here, but can’t, because I only follow NHL 😃
KHL is pretty boring and seriously corrupted. Things are starting to change slowly though.

  13. Your analysis of his skating is right on point. I say this because I skate in the same way. I lower my chests (so the entire upper body) to gain more speed, this makes it difficult to scan the ice and can't make agile moves such as a cutback. I can only make plays or open up for a shot while being in a position that's close to standing.
