Aaron Ekblad Knee INJURY | BRUTAL COLLAPSED Knee | Doctor Explains Possibilities (NHL)

Florida Panthers defenceman Aaron Ekblad was removed from the game tonight with a left leg injury in the game against the Dallas Stars. His knee BUCKLED while falling and he had to be splinted and boarded to be removed off the ice due to extreme pain and the inability to weight bear.

In this video I discuss a brief overview of potential injuries Aaron might face given his mechanism of injury. With a collapsing in of the knee as we witnessed in the video we would be worried about the following injures:
– Extra-articular ligaments – MCL and LCL
– Intra-articular ligaments – ACL and PCL
– Fractures
– Medial and lateral meniscus
– Patellar dislocation

The differential is always kept quite broad especially when we see an injury such as this one. Given the amount of pain he was in, and the limited visibility of the limb, the team acted to stabilize the leg treating it as a potential fracture until a more thorough assessment can be completed in the locker room/ER.

I will update in the comments once we get more information about his condition. He will likely be out for the foreseeable future.

I am a resident doctor training to become a sports medicine specialist. I make videos simplifying sport injuries making them easier to understand and go over how a doctor reacts to these injuries on the sidelines. We will review the anatomy, important things to consider, and discuss return to play. I will also discuss what the injury means for the athlete and their team’s future.

I will be putting out videos as injuries happen in professional sports, so if you’re interested in this content, please subscribe to my channel. If you have an injury you would like covered, send me a message and I’ll do my best cover it!

  1. From a differnet camera angle you can see more. He gets injured on contact from the hit. His ACL/MCL or perhaps both were already damaged before he even got to the boards. Again a differnet angle shows this.

  2. UPDATE – Aaron had surgery to repair lower extremity fracture. Even though in the video it was worrisome for a ligamentous injury. When an athlete is in that level of pain, it's always important to rule out a fracture.

  3. Ouch knee injuries can be the worst. They have ended so many careers. Those hockey players are some of the toughest people I have ever known
