MONTREAL CANADIENS FLEECED THE WINNIPEG JETS AND CALGARY FLAMES
The Montreal Canadiens have traded centre Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a first-round pick in this year’s NHL draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2027.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We just got the update that the 3rd round pick only transfers to Montreal if the Jets win the cup. One of the more tough conditions we’ve seen, but still, a 1st round pick is great work from Montreal. They end up with 2 1sts from Monahan in total
A 2nd round pick for the best player on your team. Fleeced? haaahaahha that was a horrible trade considering Lindholm's return. Monahan only has 750k remaining salary. Monahan is just as good as Lindholm. He was playing on the 3rd line with Habs with garbage such as Pearson, Gallagher, Armia and Anderson. Still managed to collect points. Habs management worked hard so Monahan did not surpass and overshadow overrated 8M Suzuki. Habs can't draft, can't develop, what will they do with Draft Picks? Bobrov picked Lias Andersson in the First Round. He is just as bad as Connor Timmins.
The management team from the Jets, Canucks, Habs, and the Flames have all been impressive this season. Also the Habs have a very solid team with lots of young players and friendly contracts and they have a crap ton of picks too. They're going to be insanely good in a few years from now.
Monahan is ranked third in his draft class behind McKinnon and Barkov. Fourth in points . Since Jets wanted a second line centre …. Who’s to say he isn’t gonna be a great fit with Ehlers and Perfetti. I for one am happy for this trade having Schiefele, Monahan, Lowry, and Namestnikov round out the Centres!!!
It’s comical how people try spinning getting a first for Monahan as a bad thing when the same people have been saying for weeks that they would be lucky to get more then a 3rd
First round pick to Montreal and a very unlikely third round pick the Jets would gladly give up if they win the cup. I'm shocked no other roster players were involved with the Jets going back to Montreal. This was the minimum I expected Monahan to go for a first round pick 20th-32nd overall. The majority of players selected in 20-32 are not impactful if you look at drafts from 2020-2016 and 20-32 picks the two best players drafted were Tage Thompson and Robert Thomas of the 70 players drafted 25% never made it to the NHL and stuck around, the Jets have drafted three times in that range from 2020-2016 and got Heinola, Logan Stanley and Vesalainen none of them have established themselves as NHL players.
Great deal for Montreal. They got important pieces in the future for acquiring Monahan in the first place, helping Monahan to recover his game and recover from his injury situation then they got more future pieces for moving Monahan.
For Winnipeg, this was a good deal. The first will probably be a late first which typically doesn't have great odds of becoming a better player than the one they acquired. Winnipeg also didn't give up any of their better prospects in the deal. Who knows what the conditional pick will be.
I think it is a bit over the top to call the trade with Winnipeg a fleecing. Monahan addresses an immediate issue as Scheifele is currently injured and the Jets are chasing the Canucks for the lead of the Western Conference. When Scheifele comes back, Monahan will give a lot flexibility to Rick Bowness to play him wherever he sees a fit anywhere in the Jets' top-9 whether at centre or on the wing. I think that Chevy did a good trade and that it was a fair price under the circumstances.
habs fan here and I think the Jets won this trade easily , unless Monahan gets hurt.. but as he's healthy now a late 1st round pick for him is very underwhelming, was hoping for a prospect too, good job Winnipeg u did great here!
People need to cut it when it comes to saying that the Jets got fleeced just because you don’t like the Jets just stop already you’re embarrassing yourself if you did your research you look like a total dumbass right now, Lindholm benefitted from Matthew tkachuck and so did Johnny hockey, Johnny hockey also benefitted from Monahan who the Calgary Flames foolishly traded away when he was just suffering injuries at the time
Proven nhl player for magic beans. Fleecing. Lol. Congrats to Montreal for extending the rebuild past a decade. Like all those other teams that fleece everybody trading their proven players for magic beans. Ott buff Ariz. Lol.
The fleece job was the first trade…Treliving's work…Habs got Monohan AND a first for FUTURE CONSIDERSTIONS. I mean who does that? The Habs-Jets trade was a win-win. All I can say, as a habs fan, is that I am glad Treliving is now the Leaf's GM.
I see this as a win-win-win. MTL gets another good chip for either their future, OR a trade for a good young prospect. Hughes has done that in the draft twice. WPG, gets a GOOD player to help solidify this run. Not only a good player, someone great in the locker room. I hope he stays healthy. But the biggest winner is Monahan who gets a chance for n the playoffs. I think the fleecing was to Calgary.
This is why GMs like Chevy and Allvin are running NHL franchises. Both guys are willing to get rid of high 1st round picks that they don't really need at this time or assets they can afford to use in trades to fill the needs in their rosters. Both want all the extra games with their new lineups to try to finish as high in their divisions as possible to hopefully face wildcard teams and have home ice advantage in the first rounds of the playoffs. Kinda early to decide if sheep shearing was involved.
Definitely not a fleece The 3rd is only if we win cup and be gladly if that happens. Now Monahan gets to play with Connor Scheifele Villardi Ehlers Monahan Perfetti Nino Lowry Appleton Iafallo Namestnikov Barron Ex AJF,Toninato,Gustafson,Kupari.
No i would prefer Lucius/zhilkin/prospects 2nd in a tanev deal

Good trade

The arms race in the west is on!
Kent Hughes is a giga chad
Jets were looking for a guy that would be solid and maybe make the 2nd line click, with Perfetti and Ehlers.
The 3rd is only if jets win the cup..definitely no guarantee but a small price if they win a cup
My team gets a first round pick from Devils, Rangers, or the Avs for Adam Henrique. My team is the only one left with a top 6 center available
What a joke! an unknown player for an established centre with a 30 goal history and playoff experience. NOT A FLEECING !
Not sure if its possible, but he can always re-sign with the Habs this summer, hes a UFA is he not?

I’m more comfortable trading a late first and a third then trading a prospect.
If Monahan plays to his potential it's a huge W for the Jets.
As a Habs fan, who 'fleeced' WHOM?

monahan pour 2 fois de première ronde 4 choix de première ronde minimum pour les 2 prochaine repêchage 😂
That a low 1st round pick. In the 25-32 pick range. The Jets have Montreals 2nd rounder and it’ll be a higher pick. Fleeced? Your opinion sucks.
habs fan here and I think the Jets won this trade easily , unless Monahan gets hurt..

Now trade Jake Allen and eat half his deal to Edmonton for Jack Campbell and the Oilers 2024 and 2025 first-round pick. Go Habs Go. 🧩
