The tribalism in the NHL has become so childish and transparent that it is throwing the league into bushleague territory. It is cheapening the entire NHL.
It is every time now that anything happens. Whining and snivelling and victimization crying.
Does the league want player safety or not? If the answer is yes then get control of the offenders by being consistent in the hearings.
In this case the game was over.
The offence was committed after the conclusion of the game. Imagine if he injury had been life threatening. Then you are walking head on into the possibility of criminal charges because the assault was not committed during the heat of the game but pre-meditated after the game is over.
Does the league really want to turn the time machine on and go back to the days when the judicial system were targeting the game?
Police the league properly in-house by setting policies guidelines in writing and follow
them. More direction and policies and less whining about the rulings. It is supposed to be about protection of the players not tribalism.

When these other guys get a chance to play more, play in different situtation like the power play they play well. 5 seasons he has one trick up his sleeves, play Matthew, Marner and Nylander 18 minutes in period 3 when down. Bunkis you’re missing the point. The very thing you’re complaining about is the very reason why Mo got 5 games. The slapper was not right by the code but no rules were broken. There is rules and then there is the code, Shanny wont do what you think he should because of the code.Toronto does have a loser mentality , there are weak mentally and spoiled . Without Rielly against the Blues, only one goal surrendered. The Leafs are better off without Rielly the defensive albatross.
