  1. If there is substantial money on the table…he’ll renew, imo
Edit: especially if he hasn’t broken THE record yet….

A lot of great ones, including Ovi, have said that they’ll retire when their love for the game dwindles.

Watching his play this year… I believe he’s rapidly approaching that territory. And tbh I think losing his father off the ice and then also losing Backstrom on the ice has played a large part in that.

  3. How many years he have left on his current contract?

He quits after the season that he gets the goal record probably.

The question is, what does he do if he doesn’t break the record in his final season? It’s hard to imagine him not playing an extra season if he is 20 or less goals short.

As of today he is 59 goals away from breaking the record. Let’s say he scores 10 more goals this season. That gives him 49 more goals needed in his final two seasons. If he scores 20 goals in each season, leaving him 9 short, I can’t see him retiring. Obviously, he would rather do it sooner, but given his slow 1st half this season, it might be close. Hopefully the 1st half was a fluke.

For everyone complaining about the performance of the team, I hope it’s not lost on fans that they’re watching the end of Ovi’s career. He’s only got so much left in the tank. All the memories, the Cup, everything he’s done for the city and DC sports. When he’s gone, he’s gone. I’d encourage any fan to relish these moments because you’re not gonna see a talent like him again for a very very long time.

Well ya the writing is on the wall heck even if he broke it next year he probably will retire you can tell he’s declining and he’s not as hungry as he once was yes he’s on a hot streak but it won’t last that long

Yeah we all expected him to say this. It’s no surprise.

But if he’s like a few goals away from breaking the record, one more year might be on the table.

I can’t see him retiring before he breaks the goal scoring record

  10. That’s not true. Just last week posted pic from the start 2037-38 season.
