Team 33 Rates Sharks’ Trade Deadline Candidates

This week on the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast we have an interview with Mike Santos from Team 33, an independent scouting service that consults for NHL teams around the league. He joins Sheng and Keegan to discuss the relative value of many of the Sharks’ players that may be available at the trade deadline. (39:20)

Before that though, we have our news of the week. (02:00) This week, it was announced that both Hertl and Couture would be out somewhat long-term with injuries. We break down some expected timelines (or lack thereof) for both players. (02:45)

We cover the two games this week, a 1-0 loss to Winnipeg and a 6-3 win against Calgary, while touching on the play of Kaapo Kähkönen and Filip Zadina, who shined in those two games. (10:40)

Our final topic before the interview with Mike Santos, we take a dive into some of the recent comments made by Kevin Labanc. We go into the comments and why a change of scenery needs to happen for Labanc to find his game. (23:40)

Now the Mike Santos interview! (39:20)

People have been asking, what exactly is Team 33? Mike covers the structure of their scouting service and highlights some of the teams that use their services. (39:50)

Sheng and Keegan ask Mike Santos about possible trade candidates for the Sharks, and how the Team 33 scouts are rating these players, and their trade values. (45:34)

How much are the following players worth?

Anthony Duclair (47:00)

Alexander Barabanov (53:05)

Mike Hoffman (1:00:40)

Kevin Labanc (1:03:55)

  1. Great interview again Keegan and Sheng. Mike Santos "objective analysis" of the Sharks trade prospects suggests that Mike Grier's plan to swap role players for draft picks and prospects is going far slower than Sharks fans want. None of the Sharks are worth a first round draft pick except Mario Ferraro, who they would be foolish to trade. So Sharks will have 2 first rounders, maybe get a second round pick for Anthony Duclair but the main thing is that they have many untradeable assets or UFAs who won't bring any return when contracts expire. Kevin Labanc probably should have played the season in AHL rather than being healthy scratch as it would have given him some trade value. "Lack of physicality" is his flaw according to Santos but it is also the case that he makes too many dumb passes/giveaways at crucial times and lacks intensity of Duclair or Sturm. More and more it appears that Sharks are going to suck for the next 3 seasons and one thing is that they must keep all draft picks in those years because they will be relatively high like the 2nd rounder they traded away in 2024 (which could be 33rd overall if Sharks come in last or win draft lottery. I am hoping that Sharks use more PTO contracts and scout more unsigned and undrafted players, as a larger pool of prospects provides more competition inhouse and more depth to cover injuries. I like the idea of Granlund being traded to NY Rangers and I would disagree with Santos' scouting report that he is trending downward, as he was injured and playing on worst team in the NHL for this sample of his play. He is making a comeback and I hope Sharks bet on him and keep him for the rebuild years. Sharks need much more scoring and physical defencemen in future players.

  2. I really enjoy this podcast – you guys really put a lot of effort and heart into it, and it shows. Also, great guests!! TBH, the YT shows podcasts and blogs have been more entertaining than the sharks. Without Sheng, Keegan, and JD's work, the Sharks would be too painful to follow on their own 🙂

  3. I had a groin injury from soccer. And of all things, acupuncture and deep massage helped. And what I did wrong was coming back "as soon as I felt good enough" while the injury was still there just not felt at 50% but from a full game, it kept getting re-aggravated. So "more rest than seems needed" was what was needed to truly heal that injury….at least in my case. It kept me playing but underperforming for like 4-6 months.
