This seems more like a move for the future. On the outside, its similar optics to the Tkachuck trade with Huberdeau. Huberdeau just hit 30 and was set to have a pretty big deal, but we traded him instead because the later years of that contract would be rough. We spent that money on Chucky who was a lot younger and we locked him up for his prime years which in turn extends our cup window.
We now have Montour and Ekblad looking to be paid at some point here and Montour just turned 30 and Hanafin is just 26. I’m not saying this is what’s happening, but this is right in Zito’s playbook. Also the irony of this being with Calgary is actually hilarious.

This team’s issue is committing too many penalties, which they’ve seemed to solve of late. Not sure how adding an expensive rental and having to give up a young asset (probably Lundell) helps the Panthers at all (short and long term). I like to think Zito learned his lesson two seasons ago. If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.
