Is this Lucas Raymond’s breakout year? | Midseason evaluations pt. 2

We continue our midseason player evaluations from yesterday….

Lucas Raymond has quietly put together a really nice seaosn 50 games in. On pace for 67 points, is this his breakout season? Ben Chiarot has gotten very pointed criticism from us, but this year he has begun to shift the narrative, has he exceeded our expectations? Andrew Copp has righted the ship, is it enough to get him a good evaluation? #lgrw

  1. I know with these list everyone has their critiques, so I'm gonna add to the pile. 😛 I believe #14 belongs in A tier for not blowing another acl.

  2. Raymond would be meeting expectations for me, but I had very high expectations for him this season.

Chairot is above and beyond for me. I had super low expectations for him though.

Compher is a meeting my expectations. He started off great, but I feel like he's slowed down recently. I could be wrong, but it's felt like that to me.

Copp is below expectations for me. He's come on lately, so hopefully this evaluation will be upgraded if he keeps up the hot streak.

Fabbri…. I'm going to go meeting. (Dynamism, Brian lol). He's been fine.

Fischer, I'd go slightly exceeding because I expected nothing of him.

Ghost…… why is he a defenseman? Lol He started off white hot, but some of those defensive lapses….tsk tsk. I'm going to go meeting.

Klim, slightly below expectations expectations, mostly because of his injuries and scratches.

  3. For a 4th overall pick he's definitely been disappointing no where near super star status which at a 4th pick you should be

  4. Raymond can't hang with the other team's top lines defensively.. He's got some keep away skills and can turn and get himself into space, but he's not dangerous offensively. Not 4th pick overall dangerous. He's just on the ice a lot surrounded by the Wings best players. I bet Sprong plays better 2-way with the same ice time and PP time as him.

  5. Your expectations must’ve been really low for the team that everyone is at/aboveabove expectations and we are a bubble playoff team.. this feels like work evaluations where everyone meets expectations and no one is subpar.

  6. Gotta question any evaluation of Red Wing players that has Velano ranked higher than Compher. There have been games when Compher has been our best center. And unlike Copp, J T Compher can play with any wingers you put him with. I also think you are a little harsh on Gostisbehere and his contribution to the power play this season. Both Seider and Gostisbehere play a high risk game that results in occasional turnovers. Seider, who has had his best season overall, struggles as you would expect from a young player when quarterbacking his power play unit. Fortunately we have Gostisbehere to fill that role on the other power play unit. If you are going to excuse DeBrincat as a streaky scorer you should do the same for Gostibehere.

  7. How about you balance everything with the question "what were my expectations For The Team this year"?
If you expected them to be where they are right now then wouldn't most of them be meeting expectations?

  8. I actially think Chaiarot is "Above & Beyond." We expected him to be horrible. I think he has looked pretty good. Thats not the type of improvement over expectations we had from Lyon, but I think it is right up there as how surprised we were that Kane would perform well. Kane had been a great player before.

  9. Don’t say every fan on Christian Fischer. I commented at the time of signing him that he was going to surprise everyone this year. Followed him in his career in AZ and the guy is an absolute workhorse with offensive upside. I still don’t think we’ve seen his best offense either. Hell, he scored a hat trick in AZ a couple years ago. Smart signing. Hope he stays long term.

  10. 30:55 ok i saw this stream live but was to tired at the time to comment but have an argument here… The posterchild of meeting expectations? Really. I think, atleast to me (havnt got to part 2 of this yet but i had no big expectations of either Holl or Husso this season that probably is the only guys that you guys will put bellow expectations) Klim Kostin have been by far the biggest let down on this roster. I get that he have had a few good tilts that masks that a bit (the Gudbransson fight was👌) so I dont argue that he isnt tough when he gets challenged.

BUT… This isnt a guy we just randomly sign to a leauge minimum contract this off season to be a 13th forward scrub to toss in when injurys happens… No, this is a guy that Stevie Y actively pursued and TRADED for. Not only have up a 3rd round pick for but also took a bad contract in return (Yamamoto) and ate that cap hit in buy out money for this AND next season. And after that signed Kostin to a multiyear contract with 2 mil (counting in the dead cap from Yamamoto it is about 2,7) per season… Also figurere in the fact that he is a former first round pick, only 23 yrs old when we traded for him and was on pace for a full season for between 17-20 goals last season with Edmonton and Stevie Y talked about him as a major piece this team have been looking for, as a potential young powerforward who proved with the Oilers he could be a top 6 player in the future with his upside, he isnt a talentless goon á la the "all star" John Scott type of player, that's for sure, you don't get picked in the first round if you are only viewed as that… I would absolutley name him as a slam dunk not only bellow expectations but could argue failing expectations…

You dont give up draft assets, eat dead money AND sign to that money just to be happy with having him as a healthy scratch guy who only seem to give a damn when throwing the gloves otherwise been a total nonfactor mostly just gliding around on ice looking very uninterested not putting in the work, hardly even throw a hit during a game and why he (rightfully), is mostly the guy scratched. Huge disappointment, c'mon guys, dig a little deeper…

So my question here is, how in the world is he at any level the "posterchild of meeting expectations"? I really like this pod otherwise that I follow the live streams as much as I can aswell as every Red Wing game live from here in Sweden, but this threw me off… Appreciate a bigger motivation why, that's all.
