Michael Ramssuen inks 4-year extension! | Is the top line working?

Michael Rasmussen signed a 4-year, $3.2M AAV contract extension on Tuesday. It was a well earned contract, who has really grown into his role as a big middle-six utility winger. But is it fair value? The Wings juggled the offensive lines, and they got back to their winning ways. But the top line was the one thing not working. Does Rasmussen, Larkin, and Kane need more time? Or does someone new need a shot in the top six? #LGRW

  1. I remember Holland saying something about Rasmussen is that they try to project what kind of player he would be in his prime. Well he is entering his prime years now and hasn't hit his ceiling yet.

Also, I don't understand how he hasn't been used at the net front spot on the PP yet he has always shown the ability to make good plays in tight spots and has a knack for deflections.

If he can get a bit of PP time I think he could easily be a 50-60 point player while being a defensive force at 5v5.

  2. Veleno on first line, No way. Yes he has speed, but He dont have the tools to lock the puck in the O zone on a regular basis yet. Veleno is unfortunately not Perron who is ELIT at all that stuff. Perhaps Veleno would be developed better if he stopped always going at 110%, but chose more occasions when his speed and strength come in handy. Veleno has hockey IQ, but nowhere near Lukas e.i.

Fabbri has the speed and know-how to complement Lark & Kane. The problem with Fabbri is always the uncertainty that exists if both his legs will last.

Sprong is also guaranteed to be a person who would develop better with top 6 ice time. However, the question becomes what happens with line 3 and is it really worth trying during the current season!

Most likely they give Rasmussen more opportunities to refine his level when the team is healthy. Personally, I don't think he has the quality to reach the top 6, but he will come into his own more in the bottom 6. Where he will become one of RW's future specialists. That Rasmussen now has 4 years to develop these qualities even more is necessary for RW as Rasmussen has to find out where his ceiling is.

So more likely that Steve will do something during the TDL or off season as we have youngsters who need to be slotted in. A pleasant problem to have as a GM…

  3. I'd say give Sprong some first line minutes. Some nights he's the best forward on the team. Let's see what we truly have in him

  4. Where’s all the “Trade Rass” people? Lol

This is well deserved and I think he’ll continue to improve as well.

  5. The solution for the missing peice in our top 6 is simple. Trade for Trevor Zegras. I dont care about the lack of defensive play. Id just love to see what he and kane could do together on a line centered by larkin.

  6. Want to see Sprong with Kane. I believe that could be insanely good. Sprong can get open and finish to take advantage of Kanes ability to find guys.

  7. We should look into Hanifin’s teammate Rasmus Anderson who is RHD, could instantly upgrade our top 4, and doesn’t block Edvinsson either (who is LHD). Rasmus is Swedish and should mesh well with Edvinsson. And he is only 27, could fit in really well with our current core – Larkin, Cat, Raymond, Seider.

After trading away Hronek, our right side D is a lot weaker in the system. Most of our best defensive prospects are LHD. We can move one of them plus a pick, and someone like Maata to get Anderson (we have to move a D from the roster to fit Anderson).

  8. Is it fair value from Ras's POV or fair value from the organizations POV? My answer is, the organization got a deal.

  9. Would’ve liked to see most of the rest of the expiring contract players get priority to be signed over Ras, but it’s a fair deal, especially if he continues to develop. He’s been a letdown for being a 9th overall pick though. He was drafted to be a #1/#2 center man.

  10. 2017 draft
    #9 Michael Rasmussen

    #10 Owen Tippet
    #11 Gabriel Vilardi
    #12 Martin Necas
    #13 Nick Suzuki

That’s tough as a wings fan.

  11. I say we load up the top line with Kane – Larks – Cat considering Raymond can hold his own now. So here's how the lines would fall:

    Kane – Larkin – Cat
    Sprong/Fabbri – Compher – Raymond
    Ras – Copp – Fischer
    Sprong/Fabbri – Veleno – Perron

    Seider – Walman
    Ghost – Chiarot
    Matta – Petry

    Lyon
    Husso/Reimer

Althought I do like Klim Costin as he's got sneaky offensive upside. He'd work in and out of the 4th line.

  12. JV's offensive production always shined after a few years gearing up, I think he would be a great fit with Larkin & Kane, as his D might be able to offset Kane's lack therof
