Refs shouldn’t have given him a match penalty I suppose
Like yeah, rempe should have let up on the hit, and it should have been penalized in some way, but you’ve also got to have the bare minimum of awareness and self preservation to survive in a contact sport.
It’s the same reasoning why boarding penalties have a clause where the boarded player can’t just keep their back to everyone and not worry about getting hit. At some point the onus is on you to try and protect yourself from getting injured.

Refs should have never even given him a match penalty as #1 it wasn’t even an illegal check due to Bastion being bent over and #2 even if it was an illegal check to the head “The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.” Nobody besides the most brain-dead hockey fans could argue that Rempe was attempting to injure Bastion.

Yea this was an accident. Rempe is huge, while I still think it’s a penalty, because it’s pretty much a direct hit to the head (even with Bastian in lala land and his head down). Still have to be aware in those situations, because the refs will automatically call it like this because of blood and an injured player.
I’ve never seen a player react like that on a hit tbh. Looked like he was going to cry.
