Matt Grzelcyk was likely only trying to put his stick between Max Pacioretty’s legs as a routine defensive play. But he makes contact with the tip of his blade with a spearing motion so how do you not call it a spear and punish it accordingly?

We'll never know what he was thinking, but the windup motion into the spearing removes reasonable doubt for me.
It's certainly possible it was a defensive move gone wrong, but I don't see it.
