They missed the boat last year by finishing too high. We really needed a top 3 pick in one of the best drafts of the decade. It might be the difference between being a good playoff team in 3-5yrs, and being an Elite team.
I still think its too early to rush things. Hopefully this draft we can pick up an Elite forward who will be able to contribute in 3-4yrs. We need to assess where we are at next season with Dach back at Center, and figure out where we need to fill needs, then use assets to acquire them.
As for Matheson i would be fine with trading him as long as we get good value in return (perhaps similar value offensive prospect a bit younger)? Im all for packaging a few assets to get 1 higher level asset in return, even if its a bt of a risk with high upside.
At this point we have plenty of assets to take risks, but i would not give up our #1 pick this year especially if its bottom 6.

No, you have to always look for upgrades to create internal competition. It's not a priority, but the situation came up to get a top 1C that pushed Suzuki to 2C, it's not a priority but it would improve the team, you should do it. The priority right now is a top 6 winger and goalie. Also we had a Toffoli and we shouldn't have traded him.
