I’m glad this analysis starts in 2019, because it shows a stark decline in Jarmo’s effectiveness after that season. Wondering what changed? Bill Zito left to become the Panthers GM.

Honestly, I am disappointed they fired Jarmo. He wasn’t a bad GM and his strengths (especially is scouting European players), has enabled Columbus to have a stockpile of really talented, young players. I know his coaching hires have been (mostly) bad, but I think everyone assumes that the next GM will automatically be better. Our deep talent pool makes Columbus attractive for GM candidates, but one person’s solid foundation to build on is another’s pile of assets that can be traded for players they want to draft or bring in to appease a new coach. It will be a shame if we don’t get to see some of these guys mature together and be great players and a great team.

  4. I defended the Bjorkstrand trade at the time because I thought it was needed if we were going to sign Laine and trading Nyquist would have cost us way too much. Now I wish we traded Laine.

The Babcock hiring was Jarmo’s biggest fuck up, holding on to Laine is a close second. I like Laine but he’s a complementary player and doesn’t fit our timeline. Holding onto him was emblematic of the FO’s delusions about this roster. We could have got a LOT for him in a trade before we signed him to his current contract.
