Because everyone knows they are all quit in NY when push comes to shove.

  2. chickenKsadilla

As usual, a lot of the Rangers underlying numbers don’t suggest their record should be this good. They also haven’t gotten the goaltending (this year) that the other great teams have, though that could obviously change considering Shesterkin’s pedigree.

  3. rseakan10

Unrelated, but how hard do you think Bo Horvat is kicking himself for leaving Vancouver a season before they got good

  4. NJITCommenter

    It’s because they are a bottom 10 team at 5v5 xGF%

I think(?) only Boston in 2011 won the cup with numbers that low. Fwiw, fanduel has them at the 7th best odds to win the cup right now.

  5. Jokes aside, they are largely the same team as they were last year. They get by on a great goaltending and opportunistic scoring backed by a strong power play.

I believe their PK is also pretty good, but they are atrocious 5 on 5. They are pretty weak at center, and beyond their first pair on D, nothing spectacular. Those attributes typically don’t do well in the playoff grind.

So because of that, most model may not love them.

  6. SubElitePerformance

They’re PP merchants. For better or worse the refs have historically called fewer penalties in the playoffs and it always catches up to them.

  7. mustachiolong

Analytics and also Moneypuck uses last season results in a lot of their data/projections. So their first round exit is doing them no favors.

  8. Fugazi PP merchants – MSG refs are on Dolan’s payroll XD

  9. nachos_16

because the playoffs is all about 5 on 5 play and they suck at that.

  10. ilovemyar15

Because the Rangers will never win another cup, at least not in the near future. They’re just one of those franchises that will be good year after year, with nothing to show for it.

Suits me fine. The Rags don’t deserve a cup. Scumbag owner, douchebag fans.

  11. 0.4%? Let’s fucking go boys, we’re still in it!

  12. icydaddyrich

It’s based on simulations they run and since the rangers are so low on power rankings (for middling 5v5 numbers) the model is not super high on them winning the cup compared to the teams around them that have much better 5v5 numbers.

  13. Apprehensive_Walk524

What does it matter it anyway. NJ is only 20% to even make the playoffs 😫

  14. mktcrasher

Strange, cause my Leafs should be -1,000,000% …these are bad numbers, lol.

  15. TathanOTS

    Sir this is a Wendy’s.

    They don’t hate to lose.

    They don’t like the lumber.

  16. moderngamer

Because they consistently choke in the first round

  17. Professional_One_812

The whole model is based on expected goals and expected goal differential. The rangers are 48.95% in expected goal differential. It’s hard to win when you’re giving up more goals than you’re scoring.

What also sucks about this is we are #5 in expected goal differential, but we’ve had a combo of not scoring as much as we should have and bad goaltending allowing goals that based on their methodology, shouldn’t have been goals.

  18. LionHeart_1990

Because they are not a good even strength team. They rely on goaltending and special teams. Usually not a recipe for success come playoff time.

I posted in November how they are a mediocre 5 v 5 team. Some posters cried about how I was lying, but now we are in March almost and all the analytic models still have them ranked 15th-23rd at 5 v 5.

  19. Hoping for a NYR vs DET around 1 with a very healthy Kane

  20. Christian_9712

Money puck is terrible at predicting these kinds of things. Most people’s predictions are more accurate than money puck.

  21. jimmycap123

1 Cup in 84 years. The “experts” are using the law of averages

  22. Gavik_Loran

Have you not paid attention to how the rangers perform in the playoffs the last 30 years. This is literally their standard season trajectory. Peak in the regular season and then fizzle out in the playoffs. It’s the ranger way.

  23. Grimmer026

Well I can’t enjoy the playoffs until they are eliminated, so hopefully this is true

  24. I’m guessing it’s that there’s no historical data that indicates this team will play as well as it has been. Laf is finally rounding into shape, but the model doesn’t know if he will fall off or keep it up. Their best scorer is Artemi Panarin, who produces pretty well in the playoffs, but tends to have a big fat minus at the end of series. That would be the smart way to look at it, but it’s moneypuck so they probably just assume that “xG” will someday translate to actual G.

  25. Mountain-Category215

Money puck takes expected goals into account very hard

  26. Because as friend of mine who works for them says “They’re gonna break a lot of fans hearts this year”

  27. My brother is a rangers fan and he sent me this post as a text message like every day last week lol.

  28. It’s all the negative energy I’ve been channeling at them

  29. jetlifeual

Because they’re the Cowboys of the NHL. They’ll choke quickly come playoffs.

  30. LaBoeuf2010

They’re one of the worst teams in the league defending the rush. Last few cup winners have been top-5 in that category.
