  1. LOVE The PWHL rules for the draft and the playoffs. Pretty much guarantees teams are playing meaningful games right up to the end of the season (dog fights to be 1st and be able to pick the matchup against the team with the injured goalie, between the 3rd and the 4th to end hot and miss that dreaded seed vs. team 1, and a whole sort of "mini-playoffs" between the eliminated teams to get that 1st draft pick). Been loving The PWHL so far- punching well above their weight in terms of exposure and the marketing of their stars, keeping hockey 100% accessible by streaming all their games on Youtube, being innovative and cutting-edge with new and interesting rules. Might say more about how the NHL runs things more than anything else, but I genuinely think this could turn into the first NA female league to genuinely challenge the established men's league in terms of eyeballs and market share.

  2. Im glad this little slump dallas has been in came at a good time and im sure helped tnem move on this.. as a fan whks been frustrated the last couple weeks especially after that colorado game.. i got to wake up to great news. Im very happy we got Tanev.. 😊

  3. Let me see if I have this right colon in the PWHL the winner of the first overall draft pick is the team that has the most points they accumulate AFTER being eliminated from contention, right? Not the team that has the most points that misses the playoffs (that would be terrible because it would really keep weak teams from getting stronger)? It’s an interesting idea, but even then, the weaker teams would have trouble accumulating more points than the stronger teams that missed the playoffs. I’m not sure what I think about it.

  4. Pettersson hasn't had a change of heart since he's never been decided either way. He wanted to see improvement and they've improved. All the rest is just media-nonsense-hype.

  5. Interesting thing with the PWHL and choosing your opponent, I wonder if they might do it by geography. A shorter trip could leave you fresher if you make the finals.

  6. My PWHL team the (New York City Pizza Rats) may not make the playoffs if they don't start winning. The chats on these you tube games are hysterical!!! They are giving these teams names. Some are very funny. NYC Pizza Rats, Toronto Pinecones, Boston Beans, Montreal Fries, The Ottawa Not Toronto's, and the Minnesota Frozen Ti ies are some of the favorites in the chats.

  7. "….accrues the most points after they're eliminated." Wouldn't that just cause teams to speed run early elimination?

  8. I adore the PWHL #1 Draft pick idea… and the Sens would really, really like the NHL to take a look at that.

  9. It's good to see Petterson is going to be resigned. He is a huge part of the team.Other can go like Garland and some 3rd liners, plus Meyers. That should give Vancouver enough space to not be in violation.

  10. Glad that Tanev’s been dealt already. We’d have been seeing reports on opinions after opinions after opinions about “likely trade partners for Calgary” concerning Tanev ALL THE WAY UP to the last hour of the TDL. So thank you, Calgary and Dallas for sparing us one seemingly endless saga.

  11. Why would players on bad teams want to play hard to risk losing their job to a young draft pick

  12. I absolutely love the PWHL playoff rules! All 6 teams will be incentivized to win – the eliminated teams, to get the #1 pick and the playoff teams, to get the chance to pick their opponent and travel schedule.

I really hope they'll play for the Isobel Cup, but I fear this is a bit of a pipe dream. I'm not a "the PWHL is actively trying to bury the PHF" truther, but based on how much work they've done to distinguish the PWHL from it's predecessor, I fear we've seen the last of the iconic handle-less trophy (Anya Packer you will always be famous).

  13. Considering Tanev was the most sought-after defenseman in the league. A 2nd round, conditional, and retained salary is a serious steal. I'm shocked by that value

  14. Dallas seemed to make out on this deal. Even Calgary got a prospect out of it. What does New Jersey get out of this deal?

  15. My only issue with the most points since elimination method for 1st overall pick is the fact that early eliminated teams have more time to rack up points and if a playoff race comes down to the final game of the season the eliminated team doesn’t get any points towards the #1 pick race. You might get some teams that are on the bubble tanking in an effort to get a relatively high first round pick if they’re a team likely to lose in the first round of the playoffs had they actually tried and succeeded getting into the playoffs.

I like the intention, though. I would tweak it to instead being about the best points percentage among teams who played a minimum of (n) games post elimination. My idea for what (n) would be equal to would be half the number of post elimination games (rounded up) that first eliminated team has. So if the first eliminated team has 14 games left in their season at the time of their elimination, every team eliminated with at least 7 games left in their respective schedules post elimination would be eligible for the #1 overall pick race. That means decent teams that will potentially bubble out won’t be in the running and will keep their game focused on trying to make the playoffs instead of being tempted to tank and that points percentage will make it fair the the teams with less games to get a shot at the #1 overall pick.

I understand in the PWHL the concern is negligible with only 2 eliminated teams but if this were to work in the NHL or in the future expansion in the PWHL, I think the points alone among all eliminated teams wouldn’t work.

  16. and the same applies to the Jets organization. if you want to be a Jet…sign! if not, we will trade you. what's the deal? Job security.

  17. picking your opponent is ridiculous. your already getting the worst team in terms of the standings. how bout we just let them skip the first round while we're at it. people that like this idea are the same stunads who want a shootout instead of playoff overtime

  18. i hate the Gold plan. the goal is supposed to be to win the Stanley Cup, and i hate that it punishes teams that stay in the chase and get eliminated on the last day of the season.

i think people are blind to how incentives will change if the NHL implemented the Gold plan. it won't get rid of tanking; it will make teams tank sooner in the season so that they can get mathematically eliminated sooner so they have more games to build up no. 1 overall standings points.

we have the draft conversation every year, and i keep throwing out my suggestion of having a minimum points threshold: draft order is reverse of standings (adjusted for playoff advancement), but to retain your draft position, you must earn at least, say, 60 points, or you move to the back of the line of non-playoff teams. give incentive to ALL 32 teams to ice a competitive product.
